Henry Baddour, now 24, was born at UNC Hospitals in 1999 with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. He had 15 surgeries at UNC Hospitals related to the condition, which can make it difficult to eat, talk and even hear. Now, he’s the founder of a non-profit called CleftProud that aims to connect, empower and support people with cleft lip and palate, so no one has to go through it alone. While the journey has been long and difficult at times, Baddour credits his care team at UNC Health with giving him confidence and healing. “From my personal experience, UNC has been a place filled with doctors who are open, honest and really skilled at what they do,” Baddour says. This #CleftandCraniofacialAwarenessMonth, he urges anyone affected by cleft lip and palate to find a community of people going through the same thing, as well as a care team you can trust.
