"My team won't listen to me." 😩 Sometimes as a manager, you can feel like you're talking into the void. Whether this is the reality or imagined, behind the statement are lots of feelings like... 😬 "I feel like an imposter." 😓 "They're going to do whatever they want anyway." 😳 "They're more senior and don't respect me." Whether it's feeling a lack of control or feeling like an imposter, managers have to overcome these challenges to be effective leaders. So how do you address it? That depends on where the problem is rooted in the system. The issue could be the employees having trouble adjusting to a new manager, the manager not communicating effectively (and employees not giving feedback about it), or the organization needing more focus on elevating and supporting diverse leaders so leadership in all its forms are valued. They're thinking... 😓 "It'll be done poorly." 😬 "I will be held accountable if it's bad." 😳 "If I don't help, people won't think I work hard." So how do you address it? The issue could be a employee not being prepared to rise to the task, the manager not setting roles and expectations clearly or uncomfortable with their management skills compared to their IC skills, or the organization perpetuating a culture where mistakes are risky.
