Transportation Alternatives is your advocate for bicycling, walking and public transit in New York City.
About us
Transportation Alternatives’ mission is to reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile and to advocate for better bicycling, walking, and public transit for all New Yorkers. Streets and sidewalks are 80% of our public space in New York City – but right now, our lives are polluted, congested, and endangered by car and truck traffic. Transportation Alternatives believes that this public space belongs to the people of New York City, and we are working with New Yorkers in every borough to reclaim our streets.

🚨NEW DATA 🚨 The first six months of 2024 was the deadliest since Vision Zero began — with 127 New Yorkers killed by traffic violence. Traffic violence killed one person every 34 hours. 📈 Key Stats: 🛑 This was the deadliest first six months since Vision Zero began. 🛑 New Yorkers are being killed on streets without critical safety infrastructure. 🛑 Fatalities are up in the congestion relief zone. 🛑 Motorist fatalities are at a record high. 🛑 After a historic year for pedestrian safety, pedestrian fatalities are on the rise. ➡️ Read our report: https://lnkd.in/ejxBfDiQ Our leaders need to take action now to make our streets safer. @nycmayor needs to fulfill his promises to improve 1,000 intersections and construct over 100 miles of protected bike lanes. This year, NYC has only added just over 2 miles of the required 50 miles. Congestion pricing remains our best hope to save lives by reducing the number of cars on the road. Yet, @govkathyhochul has paused some of the most effective street safety legislation we've seen in years. Gov. Kathy Hochul must reinstate the program immediately to prevent crashes and save lives. At the same time, Mayor Adams needs to follow the Streets Plan, which legally mandates the creation of new bike and bus lanes.

We know lower speed limits work, save lives, and prevent injuries, while keeping New York City's streets moving — and we're committed to fighting for 20 mph speed limits on the majority of New York City's streets.

We deserve better than constant subway delays. We deserve reliable, accessible, and fast public transit. Congestion pricing was set to deliver billions to upgrade our subways and railroads. It's not too late for Governor Hochul to reverse her decision and fix our transit system. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eJb5HWSj

Last weekend, on the anniversary of his passing, we joined Families for Safe Streets and stood with the family of Andy Gil to honor his life and the life of every New Yorker who has been killed by traffic violence in the congestion pricing zone. Andy was killed by a driver at this very spot in 2022. We held 83 sunflowers to symbolize each one of the 83 New Yorkers who have been killed in the zone since congestion pricing was passed into law in 2019. We will never know how many lives could have been saved by implementing congestion pricing earlier. Today, a New Yorker is seriously injured in the zone every 36 hours. Midtown Manhattan has the highest rate of traffic violence in all of New York City. Kathy Hochul: flip the switch. Save lives. Protect New Yorkers from traffic violence.

Governor Hochul's last-minute decision to cancel congestion pricing not only derailed a years-in-the-making plan to reduce traffic, improve air quality, and fund transit — it also costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. Congestion pricing now.
