The Santa Clara County Fire Department will be doing fire fuels reduction work along the Los Gatos Creek Trail from July 29 through August 29, 2024. The Trail will be closed from the Main Street Bridge to the Lexington Reservoir dam face from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29 and every Tuesday through Thursday through the end of August. This work will further the protective fire buffer between Highway 17 and the homes and land south of the highway. It will lessen the possibility of wildfires ignited by vehicles on Highway 17 and decrease the severity and spread if other fires start in the vicinity. There will be no impact on Highway 17 traffic. Thank you for your patience while the work is completed.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the Santa Clara Valley effective Monday, July 22, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. through Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 11:00 p.m. Cooling Center locations, including the Los Gatos Library, are posted online at https://lnkd.in/g4PA8H8H. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is offering free rides to individuals traveling to Cooling Centers along VTA routes on Monday, July 22, 2024 through Thursday, July 25, 2024. Some people face a greater risk of heat-related illness than others. Those at greatest risk for heat-related illness include: ☀️ Infants and young children ☀️ People over 65 years of age or older ☀️ People living with disabilities and chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, or cardiovascular disease ☀️ Unhoused community members ☀️ Outdoor workers or indoor workers without air conditioning ☀️ Pregnant people ☀️ Low-income with inadequate home cooling 💦Stay hydrated! Drink water often – even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you are outside sweating for many hours, consider drinking an electrolyte-replacement beverage. Avoid sugary drinks, drinks with caffeine, and alcohol because they can dehydrate you. 💦Stay cool! The best way to beat the heat is to stay in an air-conditioned space. If you don’t have an air conditioner at home, you can go to air-conditioned public spaces that are open to reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Learn the warning signs of heat-related illness, and lend a hand to family, friends, and neighbors. If someone has a high body temperature (103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher), is confused, has a fast pulse, or has a life-threatening heat reaction, call 911.

During this fourth week of Parks and Open Space Month, we are appreciating the one-of-a-kind Novitiate Park! This park is very unique as it is within walking distance of downtown Los Gatos and serves as critical connection to thousands of acres of open space managed by Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. It’s like walking through a portal directly into nature! Parks and open space provide positive alternatives for youth which can lower crime and mischief and hiking outdoors is a wonderful outlet for all ages. Novitiate Park is located at what once was the Novitiate Fathers' eight-acre vineyard. There are no remaining vestiges of the vineyard, as the land has been restored to a more natural state.

Today's #tbtLG photo shows the waters of Los Gatos Creek. Vasona Lake Dam was completed in 1935. But the waters of the Los Gatos Creek had often been diverted, starting in the 1850s, when farmers wanted to irrigate their crops. Wooden flashboard dams, like the one pictured here, existed in the early years. #LosGatosHistory #ThrowbackThursday

As Parks and Open Space Month continues, the week we want to recognize the “spine of Los Gatos” aka the Los Gatos Creek Trail! One of the many benefits of parks and open space is providing access to the serenity and inspiration of nature. As our trail users know, the Los Gatos Creek Trail is the perfect place to connect with nature in a gorgeous outdoor wooded setting conveniently located right in Town. The Los Gatos Creek Trail offers recreational opportunities for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, skaters, non-motorized scooters, and nature lovers. The full trail passes through multiple jurisdictions and is operated by the Town of Los Gatos, County of Santa Clara Park Department, City of Campbell, and City of San Jose. The Los Gatos segment of this trail has several access points at Miles Avenue, E Main Street at College Avenue, and Oak Meadow Park and Vasona County Park.
