What is technical AI governance? And how can it help to assess and strengthen AI policy options? The Future Society’s Executive Director Nicolas Moës is one of the co-authors of a newly published paper that explores these questions, guiding technical researchers to identify concrete ways to tackle current #AIgovernance challenges. Read on ⬇️

🚀 Exciting news: Our new paper “Open Problems in Technical AI Governance", led by me and Ben Bucknall, is out! In this paper, we introduce technical AI governance and outline 89 open technical challenges across AI governance, along with related resources and over 100 research questions that technical researchers could tackle to support AI governance efforts: https://t.ly/Y-mQ1 ✨Key highlights: We introduce the field of "technical AI governance" (TAIG) - technical analysis and tools to support effective AI governance. TAIG can help identify areas needing governance intervention, inform governance decisions, and enhance governance options. Our paper presents a taxonomy of open problem areas in TAIG organized by governance capacities and governance targets (which you can see in the image below!). ⬇️ Example open problems include: * Developing robust, reliable evaluations of AI systems and their societal impacts * Creating infrastructure for privacy-preserving access to datasets and models * Designing hardware mechanisms to verify compute usage or attest to audit results * Developing better tools to monitor the AI ecosystem and track trends ❗️We also want to note that TAIG is just one piece of the AI governance puzzle. We caution against techno-solutionism, and emphasize that TAIG alone isn’t sufficient and has to complement socio-technical and political approaches. 💙We've created this resource to help technical researchers find concrete ways to apply their skills to current governance challenges. Please consider sharing this post to reach more brilliant minds who may be interested in working at this intersection! 🏘️I've led this project together with Ben Bucknall and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with him and 29 brilliant contributors from academia, industry, and civil society. Their diverse expertise has made this paper a truly comprehensive resource. Big thanks to Stephen Casper, Tim F. Lisa Soder, Onni Arne, Lewis Hammond, Lujain Ibrahim, Alan Chan, Peter Wills, Markus Anderljung, Ben Garfinkel, Lennart Heim, Andrew Trask, Gabriel M., Rylan Schaeffer, Mauricio Baker, Sara Hooker, Irene Solaiman, Sasha Luccioni, Nitarshan R. Nicolas Moës , Jeffrey Ladish, Neel Guha, Jessica Newman, Yoshua Bengio, Tobin South, Alex 'Sandy' Pentland, Sanmi Koyejo, Mykel Kochenderfer, and Robert Trager who all contributed their insights, wisdom, and open problems to the paper. You rock <3 Read the full paper here: https://t.ly/Y-mQ1 #AIGovernance #TechnicalAI #ResponsibleAI #AIEthics #TAIG
