What does PE IR talent do when they aren’t fundraising? 🤔 We have been getting this question a lot of candidates looking to enter the field, potential clients looking to start building out their IR team, or established clients looking to add additional resources to their fundraising or capital formation team. Fundraising is always the first thing that comes up when it comes to IR, we all understand how important fundraising is to a PE firm. However there are many other aspects of a comprehensive IR role. Some include fund reporting and investor services, which you can learn more about here… https://lnkd.in/gpGkGsFa 😉 But there is one answer to this question that I want to focus on. And that is, PE IR talent is always fundraising. Or a better way to put it is that fundraising is never something that stops and will always be on the mind and in practice for a well run IR team. When a firm is actively fundraising, it makes sense how much time would be dedicated to that. Raising capital to close the next institutional fund or raising money to secure and close on a deal will be the number one priority. But what about when the fund achieves final close? Or 6 months to a year after that? This is when fundraising is more passive. The timeline for raising the next fund starts as soon as the last fund closes. Tasks might include managing the CRM, planning investor meetings, coming up with new strategies for current LPs and updating/strengthening the pitches for whenever the next round starts. Firms will dedicate times and resources to keeping the relationships with established LPs strong as well as start the process of finding new LPs. Additionally, PE firms could have reasons to change fundraising timelines or do so on a smaller scale. It is possible that the firm might introduce a new investment strategy and will be looking to raise a fund specific for that, which could be off-cycle from their traditional/vintage fund. And a lot of firms will offer their LPs different co-investment vehicles which would require an additional infusion of capital to be raised. Each firm has their own way of fundraising, their own timeline and also in the way they split up their IR team, and may have some talent exclusively focused on fundraising. Each firm is different. The main highlight is that fundraising is a continual cycle that never really “stops”. And while PE IR talent will always have a multitude of responsibilities on their plate, they are always in some way, fundraising. 💰 We are currently in touch with several top level IR candidates who are looking for new opportunities so if you are a firm seeking a dedicated partner we would love to connect. Really interesting article regarding the current fundraising market for PE. 😕 It is an interesting take on how "GP's need to come up with a systematic approach to generating liquidity and returns for LPs throughout the fundraising process." It is up to the GP's to use more creative and savvy means to achieve this liquidity and returns through adding in the right type of high growth/low debt companies to their growing portfolios and on the flip side careful with exit strategy ensuring it is the right time. One major takeaway from our vantage point is the emphasis and stress this puts on a PE firm. It really makes you think how a quality and talented IR team could really help with this as well as many other issues related to the current fundraising market... 😉 We are currently in touch with several top level IR candidates who are looking for new opportunities so if you are a firm seeking a dedicated partner we would love to connect. PE IR hirings continue to explode. 💣 Here at TD Newland, we have been following the recent growth in PE IR hiring. We are doing our due diligence to try to fully understand the possible reasons as to why this space has been so active recently and how we can better serve our IR clients. We recently had some conversations with seasoned PE LPs, and they shed some light on a couple different reasons to help attribute the growth. 1) Increase in fund size. As new firms arise and established firms increase fund size from fund to fund, LP bases and commitments increase, thus causing a larger strain on a PE firm. Not only does this cause an increase in LP communications but also an increase in LP reporting requirements. Historically, senior level deal team members would help shoulder the load with LP commitments, and some still do, but this responsibility has been and continues to be delegated to IR focused talent. 2) Strategic advantages. Firms have structured and prioritized top talent for their IR teams to help improve their reputation and their competitive advantage in the marketplace. The best IR professionals and departments know their portfolios inside and out and can take the lead on LP related tasks. This enables the senior deal team members to focus on their main responsibilites. This enhances the all around quality of the firm. The LPs that we spoke to were insistent, they are happy to speak to the IR departments at some funds because they are thorough, knowledgeable in answering most LP questions, and excel with the reporting and annual meetings. For other firms, they require speaking to the GPs due to the fact that the IR is lacking or below average in their responsibilities. Putting this into perspective, it really shows directly not only how important the IR group is to a PE Firm, but also the consequences of not hiring the right IR talent. Add to this the current market issues with fundraising, and it should come as no surprise as the movement in recent PE IR hires. It really makes you think why all PE firms are not considering adding resources to their IR teams??? 🤔 Would love to hear in the comments other reasons our connections may have to explain this recent trend. We are currently very busy with some quality IR mandates right now, so if you are a firm seeking a dedicated partner or a candidate contemplating a move, we would love to connect.  TD Newland is committed to making meaningful connections and fostering growth. #privateequity #investorrelations #middlemarket #lowermiddlemarket #investing #hiring #recruiting

Short yet informative article about a major PE player beefing up their IR department. 👍 Two things to highlight: 1) The IR market is very busy right now. This article shows further evidence that many PE firms are adding to their IR teams in this current climate. Whether like in this instance, adding to an established IR team or hiring the first or second hire to start building the team out, we are seeing a lot of activity across the board. 2) Related to hiring and the challenges of external market conditions, we are seeing firms looking to hire regardless of firm's timelines. We are seeing firms do the more “traditional” IR hiring gearing up for a fundraise, but also like this article highlights, hiring in between fund raises or pushing the idea of hiring when there is no upcoming plan to fundraise.  It goes to show how the IR position is evolving, and how responsibilities have increased dramatically versus when the job was heavily fundraising based. 😉 We are currently very busy with some quality IR mandates right now, so if you are a firm seeking a dedicated partner or a candidate contemplating a move, we would love to connect!  TD Newland is committed to making meaningful connections and fostering growth. #privateequity #investorrelations #hiring #middlemarket #lowermiddlemarket

“We like what we are hearing, love your background, see the overlap on existing and past clients, love the quality of candidates that you are working with, but we have an exclusive relationship with another recruiter…” 😕 We hear this type of answer from perspective firms quite often. Hiring by nature is extremely competitive. We would be surprised if firms weren’t working with other recruiters to help. Our feeling is that the main point of recruiting is to find the right person. The most qualified candidate who seamlessly fits into the firm culturally, who can help the firm reach its fullest potential. And to find that right person, it would only make sense to use all the resources at your disposal…or at least that’s how we operate. Like most other aspects of an investment firm, team building is all about collaboration. It's about individuals coming together, pooling their strengths, ideas, and resources to achieve something greater than what they could accomplish alone. We feel that hiring should be the same way 😁 ….We would love to hear what others think! If you're a private equity firm seeking a dedicated partner or a candidate contemplating a move in the PE sector, let's connect. Even if you are considering making a hire down the line, we would love to have a conversation!
