The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is tracking more than 1,700 former industrial sites across the state. These sites present a powerful opportunity for Virginia: we can redevelop these lands with solar, meet the state’s energy needs, and support vast economic development while preserving Virginia’s most precious natural and agricultural resources. Do you know when the first solar cell was created? In April of 1954, scientists at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey made the first silicon solar cell; their development appeared on the front page of The New York Times that month. Solar energy technology has come a long way in the last 70 years. In 2016, the US surpassed 1 million solar installations. “In 2023, solar accounted for over 50% of new electricity generating capacity added to the grid and employs over 260,000 Americans.
