Read about how a tour of Serpa led Sebastian Avina to pursue an internship and eventually a welding career with us. We are proud to support students in our community in their pursuit of technical education!
Sebastian Avina, an alumnus of College of the Sequoias, unexpectedly discovered welding when taking a welding sculpture course as an elective, sparking a newfound passion. Joining the welding cohort led to a pivotal moment when Avina and his classmates toured Serpa, where he discovered #internship opportunities that ultimately launched his career as a full-time #welder at the company. “I like working with my hands in a skilled trade because there is always something different to do and learn every day," said Avina. According to instructor, Randy Emery, “Sebastian had an intensity and focus that made him a very successful student; his work ethic and ability to adapt made him stand out.” Reflecting on his journey, Avina emphasized that COS's Welding program equips students for success from the ground up. “COS prepares students with everything they need to begin a welding career. I started in the program barely knowing how to use a measuring tape. Now, accurate measurements and tolerances down to 1/64 of an inch are essential for my work.” Avina highly recommends COS, highlighting its supportive staff, knowledgeable faculty, expansive industry network, and excellent facilities. "I encourage students to seek assistance, apply for scholarships, and utilize every available resource."
