WHY SALES CYCLES ARE GETTING LONGER [*UNPOPULAR OPINION*] It’s no secret that it’s taking longer than ever to close deals. Too many stakeholders need to agree. The CFO gets involved. Budgets are cut. Buyers are more difficult than ever… Without a doubt, all these are important external factors. But what if we look inward at our own process? Are we doing the best we can to help buyers make a decision faster? Here is an example we are all familiar with - a tricky technical question we don’t know the answer to from the top of our head. [Yes, Karen, that never happened to you, but it does happen to the rest of us] You finish the call and you promise the prospect to get back with an answer to their question asap. You don’t get to follow up until the end of the day because you have other meetings to prepare for. You end up sending an email to the product team only the morning after the meeting. Your company is remote and the product team is actually based in Europe. By then time your email gets to them, it’s already 4 pm and they don’t get to look at it until the day after. Product manager gets back to you and asks for more context. You have to go back to the meeting recording and find the relevant part of the discussion. But the meeting was now 3 days ago and you take 30 minutes of scrolling back and forth on the recording to find the right moment. A few more emails and back and forth and you finally reply to the prospect… 6 working days after your initial meeting. Worst case - the deal has lost momentum or the buyer went with a competitor. Best case - a much longer sales cycle. P.S. It doesn't have to be like that! 😉 #sales #salescycle
