Congratulations to Publisher Elinor Tatum and the New York Amsterdam News team, along with the other selected newsrooms, for being chosen for ProPublica's Local Reporting Network! Each outlet will dedicate a reporter for a three-year term focused on investigative reporting. “Over the last six years, the Local Reporting Network has delivered critical reporting to communities across the country and prompted real-life changes,” ProPublica Assistant Managing Editor Sarah Blustain said. “With the support from the Knight Foundation, we’re excited to be able to support more sustained partnerships with these three newsrooms, all of which have a demonstrated track record of investigative reporting. We’re thrilled to get started.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gNrtMJRi #Journalism #LocalNews #Community #NewYork #Arizona #Illinois

The latest report by Pew Research Center shows that up to 70% of Americans are at least somewhat interested in news about local elections, yet more than half say it’s not easy to find the news they need to take part in the local political process. "There are clear links between Americans’ sense of community attachment and their experiences with news on local government and politics. Those who feel more attached to their community have more interest in news about local laws and local elections, higher satisfaction with the quality of their local political news, and an easier time finding the information they need to vote." The resolution authorizes League members to lobby for legislation aimed at rebuilding local news. In his latest essay, Wesley Lowery, executive editor of the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University, advocates for a federal public trust to subsidize the news, aiming not for a government-run media but rather a government-ensured one. “It has become increasingly clear that thinking of press freedom only as a market that must be protected from government interference cannot sustain the kind of robust, diverse, and accessible press that a healthy democracy requires... we must reimagine the relationship between the press and the public and consider bold new forms of public support for journalism." The Ontario government is requiring Crown corporations and agencies to spend 25% of ad budgets on local news. Rebuild Local News Policy Manager Lori Henson tells The Globe and Mail that redirecting government advertising spend can be an effective tool with real bipartisan appeal. The mandate in Ontario mirrors similar measures passed in the U.S., including in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. Henson spotlights how the government advertising initiative in NYC generated $1 million of revenue for news publications in the first year. "In recent months, the amount of organic search traffic Google has been sending to publishers has fallen off a cliff. Newsrooms nationwide — from Boston to Seattle, from the Jersey Shore to Southern California — have watched their formerly reliable search traffic numbers and page rankings plummet."
