Professor at UCLA Anderson School of Management, author of YOUR FUTURE SELF, and host of The Behavioral Divide
Does the you of today hate the you of tomorrow? I don't think the answer is yes! But I do think it's a worthwhile question to ask, given that many times it might seem like we treat our future selves in less than friendly ways. I'm a big fan of The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos - Laurie always covers cutting edge social science topics and figures out how to make the findings approachable and practical - so I was delighted when she had me on the show to talk about the ways we can improve well-being now AND later, and determine how we might treat our future selves with more kindness. But our conversation took a fun turn: we focused on how we can treat our current selves in friendlier ways that could also lead to more happiness and well-being later. It was a perspective that was more "and" than "or." As Laurie put it: "in reality, present and future you often have more shared goals than we might realize." Laurie also got to have a sneak preview of the "Future You" AI tool I've been working on in collaboration with MIT Media Lab members Pat Pataranutaporn, Peggy Yin, Pattie Maes and Kavin Winson (stay tuned for more about this soon!). Laurie Santos's experience mimicked mine: she had not only had more compassion *for* her future self, but also experienced a greater sense of compassion *from* her future self. “We tell stories about heroes because of a simple fact about the human mind: Courage is contagious. And when you hear about someone doing something heroic, it makes you want to be a hero too. And these days, we could use more heroes.” Malcolm Gladwell's new podcast “Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage” arrives June 26. #podcast #veterans #medalofhonor #courage #heroes

🎙 Podcast Alert 🎙 Some problems seem impossible to solve. And yet those are the challenges that most need our attention. This week on Fixable legendary journalist Malcolm Gladwell gave us insight and inspiration on how to “fix the unfixable.” He delivered a masterclass on the power of storytelling and why the people most optimistic about a problem are often the ones who are closest to it. It was the privilege of a lifetime to host him. Thanks to all of our listeners for a fantastic season. We’ll be taking a short publishing break and be back in August with new episodes. In the meantime, we’ll be sharing some other podcast episodes we’ve loved in the feed. Happy summer, everyone. Starbucks’ stock price dropped sharply after the company reported a slowdown in sales, profits, and store visits. Everybody seems to be worked up about it, especially former chairman and CEO Howard Schultz. In our latest Unsolicited Advice segment on Fixable, Anne and I spill the tea (er, coffee) on how the company can turn things around. Harvard Business School | TED Conferences | Pushkin Industries

We’re introducing a new segment for FIXABLE today - Quick Fixes - where we tackle the work problems of two listeners in under 20 minutes. One listener struggles with how to quit gracefully, and another is challenged by their team’s slow pace. Both issues require a shift in perspective to understand how other people experience us in the workplace. We have some actionable advice to help you do that and more in this week’s episode. 🎙 Podcast Alert 🎙 Turns out workplace mental health is also #fixable. But we have to be willing to talk about it -- and invest in collective solutions. My wonderful colleague Lauren Cohen started his career in behavioral science studying family businesses, and (surprise!) surfaced mental health and our responses to as significant variables in company performance. Anne Morriss and I learned so much from this conversation. Warning: multiple role plays ahead.
