“How did you convince your cofounder to name Hashicorp after yourself?” 🌶️ You know a podcast is good when Jean Yang starts with this question for the cofounder of HashiCorp. I joined Postman a few months ago, and heard we had a podcast. I realize I work here, but damn this pod is good. This season is focused on leadership, both C level and individual contributor level, and I’m loving the conversations so far. On this episode, I particularly liked the conversation with Mitchell Hashimoto about Hashicorp’s culture. Hashicorp went remote first YEARS before everyone else. Before Slack. Before Zoom. Before obvious collaboration tools. How did they make this work as a company to brainstorm on 0 to 1 remotely? Best practices were: 1) huge writing culture and documenting. 2) chat culture. It’s not about putting text in a box. Chat literacy means understanding the difference between ending a sentence with 1 period, 2 periods, 3 periods, or no periods. All have different meanings. Also fundamental was using emojis to convey emotion in an emotionless medium. They didn’t “enforce” this. Instead they used good onboarding docs, with the idea that you have to convey emotion and body language purely through text, and conforming through peer accountability. They encouraged others to DM people when they saw something that could be communicated better, and mostly peer to peer so someone higher up doesn’t say it and have it come off as aggressive. https://lnkd.in/gWNpqFG2
