Very cool to tour the PECO green roof with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS)! 🌱 this 42,000 square feet of green roof can sequester 15 million gallons of rainwater in Center City.💧 Thank you for the opportunity to learn more about the city! I especially enjoyed the native perennials and pollinators… 🐝

Our "Love Where You Live” Front Porch Challenge isn't just about creating beautiful gardens, it's about cultivating a sense of community pride and ownership. In Nicetown and Tioga, PHS works alongside residents to transform blocks into vibrant green spaces, fostering a love for gardening and promoting a cleaner, safer neighborhood. The 2000 block of Venango St. stands as a testament to the transformative power of gardening — this year, every single house on this block rose to the challenge! Read about how this Philly neighborhood was transformed and join PHS to support efforts like these: https://bit.ly/4cR0q58

In fall 2021, I enrolled in the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) #TreeTenders course and learned about tree care, tree identification, proper planting and are trained in tree biology, identification, planting, maintenance, and community engagement. People enrolled in this class were from all over the Greater Philadelphia area. The class was on zoom and in participant list I saw the name Derrick Wu. I sent him a direct message through the Zoom chat and asked if he was the same Derrick Wu in my Buy Nothing group in Ardmore. He was. Tree Tender graduates are expected to join up with other Tree Tenders to start their own groups. My husband, Joe MacNeal, had already started the Ardmore Tree Stewards group. So I invited Derrick to join us. Ardmore is a high-priority planting area for the Shade Tree Commission. 20 years ago, Ardmore and Bala Cynwyd were designated as high-priority planting areas in the Lower Merion Township Open Space Plan due to very low canopy cover. Ardmore's tree canopy has only aged since then. We need both species and age diversity in our trees. Since then, Derrick has become a key team member of many PHS Tree Tenders who regularly volunteer in support of work in Ardmore and Wynnewood. Derrick is a guy who easily says yes to come a little bit earlier and to stay later to help do whatever still needed to be done; to be quick to volunteer to help with quality assurance checks, tree staking, and tying in the days following planting; to attend pruning club events, learning from PHS the science and art of pruning young trees; to clear invasive vines; to help collect health indicator data on trees planted months before; and when called upon to professionally represent the PHS Tree Tenders group with the public. Ardmore Tree Stewards team of more than a dozen PHS Tree Tenders have planted (and tended) over 150 trees in Ardmore and Wynnewood since fall 2021. Derrick likely is in the top three of local tree tenders who has had his direct hand in planting -- and caring for – the most trees in Ardmore Ward 4, specifically, over the past seven PHS planting event cycles. We need more Derricks. We need more trees. We need more Tree Tenders who speak for and care for the trees. Consider signing up to be a Tree Tender. https://lnkd.in/eEYjTWd8

In the era of remote and hybrid work, thriving public spaces have the power to transform downtown. "Imagine a future where we invest in parks and public spaces so they can be the civic infrastructure for a changing climate and the social infrastructure to bring people together face to face. Imagine a day when every sidewalk is cool and green on a summer day, and wide streets have flourishing median gardens that relieve heat and add beauty. "Philadelphia can realize this future, but it will require shifting mindsets, a willingness to center public space as Philadelphia’s greatest asset, increased spending, and the collective courage to imagine and invest in a reimagined public space network. The future will be defined by the actions we take today." Patrick Morgan of Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation at Drexel University and Matt Rader of Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) make the case for investing in public space as civic and social infrastructure in this quarter's AIA Philadelphia Context Magazine. https://lnkd.in/e2xfgW2w #socialinfrastructure #civicinfrastructure #publicspace #philadelphia

A little slice of PHS history: The Gardenmobile 🌱🛻 During its time on the road (1974 - 1984), the PHS Gardenmobile brought seedlings, soil, and education to neighborhoods and gardeners all across the city. Today, PHS staff provide resources to community gardens, maintain public gardens, and lead educational workshops in our various green spaces all over the region.
