Oakland Promise is a cradle-to-career nonprofit that empowers young people and families with scholarships and support.

About us

As a 501c3 non-profit, our vision is that every child in Oakland graduates high school with the expectations, resources, and skills to complete college and be successful in the career of his or her choice. We aim to accomplish this dream through our four programs: Brilliant Baby, Kindergarten to College, Future Centers, and College Scholarships and Completion. Brilliant Baby helps parents raise thriving children by offering a supportive community, reducing financial stressors, and establishing a college savings account ($500) as an early investment in your baby’s bright future. We are a resource for parents and guardians during the first critical years of your baby's life. The program provides financial coaching and a supportive community for parents. K2C's vision is to serve the 5,000 students who start Kindergarten in Oakland Public schools each year. There are thee main components for K2C: (1) we open an Oakland Promise college scholarship seeded with $100 as a start (that can grow to $500 at high school graduation) for all Oakland public school kindergarten students, (2) support families to open their own 529 college savings accounts and 3) create a college-going culture at schools with K2C teams consisting of teacher, parent, principal and community liaison. College Access Future Centers are school based advising centers in Oakland high schools and large middle schools to support college and career planning for all students. Staff at these Future Centers will ensure that all students develop a career and college plan. They also will support all seniors to apply for college, financial aid, scholarships, and high leverage internships. Our College Completion team provides advising and mentorship support along with scholarship distribution. OP will provide financial support to address the cost barrier that unrepresented students experience in pursuing a college education. Students at 2-year and technical colleges will receive from $2,000 to $4,000 per year.

Director of the Brilliant Baby Program with Oakland Promise

Oakland Promise Brilliant Baby families are so grateful that you provide so many of our Community Connection workshops each year. Thank you to all of the sponsors who help make this possible and to your leadership for inviting our team members Deprece `Bonilla and Yabnely Lara as your guests to this event!

🌟What an unforgettable evening at our 2024 Building on Books Celebration earlier this month! 🌟 Thanks to the incredible support of attendees and sponsors, we surpassed our fundraising goal and have taken a huge step toward building brighter futures for the young learners in the Bay Area. These generous gifts will allow Tandem to continue partnering with educators and families to promote language, literacy, math, and social-emotional learning through accessible early learning programming. Also shoutout to our special guest authors that made this celebration a truly exciting event!💖 #EarlyLearning #FundraisingSuccess #SupportEducation #BrightFutures #CommunityImpact #education #educationnonprofit #nonprofit #bayarea #sanfrancisco #alameda #contracosta #learning #earlyeducation #literacy #earlyliteracy #math #earlymath #charity #dogood #philanthropy #celebration #fundraising

    Storyteller and Performer

I had the great honor and privilege of being the Student Speaker at Oakland Promise's 9th Annual Award Celebration. I am very grateful to have been able to return to my community and share my inspiring story of navigating the education system and my journey to becoming a Community Leader. During the event, I had the opportunity to meet community leaders and make valuable connections. It was a wonderful experience to inspire the next generation of Oakland Future Leaders. I hope to continue inspiring future generations and to carry on my community work. Thank you, Oakland Promise, for this opportunity. Thank you to Lucina Parada, and Pete Haviland-Eduah, MPP for making this happen!

Last night, Oakland Promise celebrated its 9th Annual Awards Ceremony, honoring the resilience, determination, and academic achievements of the Class of 2024 alongside their families, supporters, donors, volunteers, mentors, and staff. This year, we proudly awarded nearly $5 million in scholarships and college persistence support to over 1,100 deserving Oakland public high school seniors who will continue their post-secondary education this fall. Each of our scholars embodies the spirit of Oakland. A special thank you to our scholar speaker, Edgar Galvez , who missed his high school graduation in 2020 and will graduate next month from UC Davis with a double major in Sociology and Psychology. His speech emphasized the power of resilience and community support in overcoming adversity and achieving success. Keynote speaker Ay'Anna Moody continued this theme, underscoring the transformative power of education and community support and encouraging students to embrace their unique challenges and opportunities. Her words reinforced that Oakland Promise is here to support scholars every step of the way. I want to personally acknowledge Oakland Promise staff, board of directors, alum speaker Ana Navidad Rayon, our partners at OUSD, Chief of Staff Dexter Moore Jr., Ed.L.D., City of Oakland Accountability Officer Jennifer Cabán, MPA, OUSD high school network superintendent Vanessa Sifuentes-Dimaano, our MCs Lucina Parada and Pete Haviland-Eduah, MPP and all those who contribute to Oakland Promise's mission. Your individual dedication and support make a profound difference. Together, we are weaving a strong web of support to scaffold the next steps on our scholars' journeys. Thank you for your invaluable support. #CradleToCareer #CommunityBuilding #HigherEducation #OaklandPromise #OpportunityChangesEverything https://lnkd.in/gXTC3Jhg
