Transforming Schools, Changing Lives
About us
NYC Outward Bound Schools transforms schools and changes lives, with a focus on serving students from historically underserved communities. We partner with public schools to help them deliver demanding and engaging academics, and build positive and supportive school cultures, generating significant achievement gains for thousands of NYC students each year. Our educational approach and strategies are implemented school-wide in our Network Schools which use the EL Education model, emphasize college access and preparation, and leverage our leadership and wilderness programming. We also broaden our impact by bringing our approach and proven best practices to students and teachers beyond our network through our Adventure & Team Building programs and Select Strategies professional learning services. Founded in 1987, NYC Outward Bound Schools was the first independent urban Outward Bound organization in the United States. Over more than 30 years, we have helped to bring out the best in more than 100,000 students, preparing them for success in college, careers, and citizenship.

Exciting update! Our return to urban exploration programming is being piloted by students, for students! Learn more:
This spring, a group of NYC Outward Bound Schools Student Advisory Council members helped pilot a new neighborhood-based urban exploration program in NYC. Student Advisors serve as liaisons from their schools and collectively help improve conditions around belonging, agency and engagement for students across the NYC Outward Bound network. In May, they embarked on a day program, exploring the streets of Long Island City, NY, where NYC Outward Bound’s headquarters resides — visiting the sculpture center, waterfront, and more to better understand the idea of belonging and what supports it. This pilot represents a return to local urban programming for us at NYC Outward Bound Schools, and even more exciting — is being crafted with NYC students and for NYC students! “I'm proud of the relationships we built as a team and the fact that we were able to work together as a group for the urban project,” said Adriana, a member of the Student Advisory Council and a rising 8th grader at Launch, a NYC Outward Bound school in Brooklyn.

Check out this great profile on one of our lead instructors (and NYC Outward Bound Schools alum), Marcus!
Marcus Mekhail is a Lead Instructor at NYC Outward Bound Schools. Born and raised in Coney Island, New York, Marcus spent most of his younger days on the beach where he had a unique opportunity that most New Yorkers don’t — to build a strong connection to the natural environment. In his eagerness to share his passions with others, he also accidentally developed a knack for teaching. Marcus’ relationship with Outward Bound began when he enrolled as a student at Leaders High School, a NYC Outward Bound school in Brooklyn. The Outward Bound core values were ingrained in the school curriculum, but it was the week-long camping trip for all new students that really brought these values to life for Marcus. He remembers feeling so far out of his element during the trip — but with the guidance of his instructors — still being able to have fun, explore, and think introspectively. Marcus attributes many of his successes to the long lasting impacts of this course. Shortly after graduating college, Marcus returned to NYC Outward Bound as an instructor with the simple goal of paying it forward. He believes that outdoor adventure can be such a powerful tool to break down limitations and build up self confidence. Moving forward, Marcus wants to continue to encourage and support youth in fueling whatever it is that sparks them!

NYC Outward Bound Schools reposted this
“In 2022, I left my home country of Haiti speaking French and Haitian Creole, and came to New York not knowing English too well. As I went through the school year at The Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School everyone — from teachers to other Haitian students — helped me with my transition being in my first American school. They would help me translate a lot of my school work and help me pronounce new words daily. One of the classes that helped me most was Crew. Crew is a safe space and an advisory class at all NYC Outward Bound Schools, where we build respect, compassion, stewardship, courage and perseverance. Because I felt so safe in my school community, I challenged myself to become a peer tutor and a leader both in and out of classes. The same girl who, two years ago could not formulate a proper sentence in English, is the same girl now helping others to be heard. I will forever be grateful to my Outward Bound school for giving me opportunities to express myself, celebrating my achievements and loving me for who I am.” Hilary Chery, rising 12th grader at Kurt Hahn, a NYC Outward Bound school in Brooklyn 2024 & NYC Outward Bound Schools Gala student speaker

We are so proud of our Launch Expeditionary Learning Charter School students, who each year, study the trends of gun violence in their community and end the unit with a walkout to raise awareness. This year, it earned the attention of The New York Times:
