According to the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (MOCADSV), 18,447 requests for domestic violence-related services were UNMET in 2023 – just in the Kansas City Region* alone. That means on average each day, agencies were unable to meet ❗50 requests❗ from survivors because they lacked the resources to do so. Will you help us say “YES!” in 2024? Your help can save a life. Give here 👉 newhousekc.org/donate. *KC Region = Carroll, Clay, Clinton, Jackson, Platte, and Ray Counties

Did you know we serve more than 70 meals a day at Newhouse? Our kitchen staff cooks three meals daily to make sure survivors have nutritious food to fuel their bodies and minds while they heal. Our team likes to use local, fresh ingredients to create delicious meals that are so good that some days you feel like you're in a cafe. They also make sure that food and snacks are available 24/7 for residents who have long work hours and new clients who arrive in the middle of the night.

Let's bust some DV myths this Monday! ❌ Only women experience domestic violence. 💜 TRUTH: Many male clients do not come forward about their abuse due to fears of not being believed, as well as shame and embarrassment. Last year, 15% of survivors Newhouse served identified as male. ❌ Domestic violence is intimate partner violence. 💜 TRUTH: DV can occur between a parent and child, siblings, or even roommates. ❌ Domestic violence is physical abuse. 💜 TRUTH: DV can also be emotional, mental, verbal, or sexual abuse, or worse - a fatality. It can also be isolation, stalking, intimidation, or financial control. The more you know about domestic violence, the better you can recognize it. If you or someone you know is experiencing DV, please call our 24/7 hotline at 816.471.5800.

Our friends from Burns & McDonnell (T&D Department) hosted their quarterly volunteer day here at the shelter which included bingo, donuts, and LOTS of prizes. Memories were made for the residents at Newhouse and you could hear the laughter throughout the shelter. We are grateful for our friends at B&M for always stepping up to support survivors at Newhouse! 💜

Which arrangement do you love?! 💐😍 Our amazing Imagine a Day Gala committee volunteers and staff have been working hard behind the scenes for months to prepare for this year’s gala on November 9. Beautiful flower arrangements like these will be on some of the tables at the gala, and we must thank our friends at Toblers Flowers for their generosity!

Meet two of our summer interns, Julie and Teresa! These compassionate, enthusiastic gals have been instrumental in several important projects and tasks at Newhouse such as facilitating community donations, getting resources distributed into public spaces, and helping with the New Day Breakfast last month. Teresa is working toward her MBA with a concentration in entrepreneurship at UMKC’s Bloch School, and has big plans to be a serial social entrepreneur to solve societal problems. Julianna Headrick celebrated graduating from the University of Missouri in May with a degree in Health Science and has enjoyed the nonprofit sector so much, she plans to pursue a career in it or the area of public health! We are so grateful for their hard work and positivity – they have been a joy to work with this summer! We wish you the best of luck in your next chapter and we’re certain you’ll both do BIG things!

This painting is everything!!! 🥹😍 One of our clients surprised our team with this beautiful painting she created to say thank you, and we are in awe. She is one of the very talented artists who hand painted terra cotta pots that are included in the Worth It Kits. On the back of this picture, she wrote an endearing message about how painting the pots has been very therapeutic and brought “deep rest to my soul.” We compensated her for her time on the pots, and she has used the funds for car repairs so that she can continue to get to work and build the independent life she and her children deserve. We are beyond proud of her and grateful to her for sharing her beautiful art with KC! Send a Worth It Kit to someone today > newhousekc.org/merch.
