Hydroponic Classrooms
About us
NY Sun Works is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to bringing quality sustainability science and climate education to K-12 public schools. Through our Hydroponic Classrooms, we provide hands-on learning experiences that foster scientific inquiry and environmental stewardship. Our programming uses a variety of cutting-edge hydroponic farming systems and supporting technologies to cultivate student engagement while fostering curiosity, creativity, and a sense of scientific inquiry. Our innovative approach allows students to grow food from seed to harvest, understanding the connection between humans, technology, and the environment and their direct relationship to climate change — all while growing hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to share with their families and school communities. NY Sun Works serves a diverse population of students primarily across the five boroughs of New York City — 39% Hispanic, 19% Black, 21% Asian, and 17% White with over 72% of students’ families residing below the poverty level. Our programming is accessible to all types of learners, including those who require special accommodations, and is designed to be inclusive and culturally responsive. Our first Hydroponic Classroom opened in a Manhattan public school in 2010. Since then, we’ve grown to 300+ schools across NYC - 15% of all NYC schools - and will reach 120,000 this year alone. Genuine care about the quality of life on Earth now and for future generations is a characteristic of the climate movement that you can literally witness firsthand in real-time following Megan Nordgren and New York Sun Works. New York Sun Works is an amazing worthy 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that integrates hydroponic farming systems into K-12 schools to enhance education. Their Hydroponic Classrooms offer hands-on learning, transforming students into "Farmer Scientists" who grow food from seed-to-harvest while learning about the interplay between humans, technology, and our environment. Serving a diverse and generally under-resourced student population, New York Sun Works has partnered to build over 300 classrooms, impacting more than 120,000 students annually with a curriculum aligned to Next Generation Science Standards, supported by comprehensive teacher training, and celebrated at the annual Youth Conference at the Javits Center. The full replay of the 13th Annual Youth Conference will be available on YouTube soon where you can see for yourself delightful scientific method presentations about meaningful topics such as water contaminant testing, temperature effects on plant growth, compost tea fertilizer assessment, and even cancer research. Thank you climate heroes Megan Nordgren and all the partners, supporters, volunteers, staff, faculty, students, and everyone involved with New York Sun Works for such impactful work strengthening our community resilience and bringing joy to the world. #everyweekisclimateweek #environmentaleducation #nysunworks #resilience #gratitude #peace

Climate education should be a collaborative effort, which is why we were honored to speak alongside SEI during the most recent North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) eeWEBINAR. We're inspiring climate action in schools across NYC, and are thrilled to share our insights with others in hopes of growing a greener future! 🌱
"We believe every student should have the opportunity to engage with climate solutions," said Cyane Dandridge, SEI Founder and Executive Director. Speaking at the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) eeWEBINAR on climate education, Dandridge emphasized the importance of empowering young people. A wonderful discussion with Manuela Zamora, Executive Director of New York Sun Works, hosted by Judy Braus. Watch the full discussion: https://lnkd.in/gZ9AXhAU

Join us on April 30th for an inspiring webinar all about Climate Education and Action! 🌱
Studies show that 84% of students are worried about the impacts of climate change (The Lancet, 2021) and that 74% of surveyed K–12 educators lack confidence in teaching these complex topics (Edge Research & NAAEE, 2022). So how do we help educators and students gain the confidence and skills they need to address climate issues? Find out on April 30 when NY Sun Works and SEI share their methods, successes, and future aspirations in the eeWEBINAR, “Inspiring Climate Education and Action.” Register to attend and receive the recording, and don’t forget to bring your questions! https://lnkd.in/gaTzzEnc #eeWEBINAR #GreenWorkforce #ClimateEducation
