Meet Valentina Rossell Olmos, a mechanical design and materials lab engineer in #NUWCDivisionNewport’s Undersea Warfare Weapons, Vehicles, and Defensive Systems Department, who is featured as July’s new professional. Originally from Johnston, Rhode Island, Valentina attended the University of Rhode Island where she earned her master’s degree in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics in April 2022 and was hired at Division Newport in September 2022. In her role as a mechanical design and materials lab engineer, she characterizes materials and test components to help inform finite element analysis (FEA) models for many of Division Newport’s branches, ultimately supporting the U.S. Navy warfighter and fleet. “I participate in research and development projects that support the next generation of naval vehicles,” Valentina said. “I also collaborate in groups to investigate basic structural mechanics research using FEA and experimental methods.” Her favorite part about working at Division Newport is having the opportunity to support a variety of projects and her co-workers. “My co-workers are so knowledgeable, helpful and friendly,” she said. “I learn something new every single day.” Valentina’s biggest role model in her life is her mother. “She has worked hard her entire life to get me to where I am now and continues to be my biggest fan.” Valentina has a few pieces of advice for those who may follow in her career footsteps. “Do not be hard on yourself when you make mistakes or feel confused, everyone has been there,” she said. “Also, make sure you get enough sleep and surround yourself with people who have similar goals.” To learn more about job opportunities at Division Newport, visit https://lnkd.in/eJxAQ3U #WhatWeDoMatters #underseasuperiority

🗣📣#NAVSEANews Alert! The “War Canoe” is back on the field! Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility has delivered the Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, USS Hawai’i (SSN 776), back to the fleet! Since the start of her maintenance period in 2021, approximately 19,000 individual jobs were completed to upgrade and keep Hawai’i fit for service. From stern to bow, the submarine received a thorough modernization, all due to the team’s ability to work smoothly through each phase. “In executing sea trials and closing our depot modernization, USS Hawai’i Sailors and teammates from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard met every challenge head-on, bringing the War Canoe back to the fleet ready to fight,” said Cmdr. Daniel Jones, USS Hawai’i commanding officer.
