Project of the Week: James Baldwin Elementary School serves a diverse population with many vulnerable students coming from trauma, food insecurity, housing insecurity, and other challenges. The design supports students furthest from educational justice with a tapestry of spaces at different scales where students can interact and feel safe. A curved, meandering hallway weaves through the school, removing any institutional feel and adding a sense of discovery. Every space is filled with natural light, and biophilic connections to the outdoors give visual relief. Classrooms and common spaces feature calming nooks to reduce reliance on disciplinary interventions. Project of the Week The Environmental Education Center at DeForest Park in north Long Beach is a state-of-the-art eco-friendly facility. Expressive roof design and concrete seat-wall basin, feature stormwater capture systems, alongside landscaping adorned with California native plants and trees. Special educational signage by Handbuilt Studio adds fun interactivity, allowing passersby a chance to stop and enjoy the public space. The Environmental Education Center at DeForest Park and Wetlands serves as a hub for environmental stewardship and community engagement along the lower LA River. It's the operational base for Conservation Corps Long Beach's activities in this area, offering community education, supporting hikers, bikers, and other trail users. This center underscores the importance of environmental health for community safety and well-being. Here, Corpsmember training is conducted and focuses on habitat restoration and invasive species removal in the Wetlands. Glen Dake City of Long Beach VCA Engineers B&B, Inc. Spanning 9,100 square feet, this modern facility includes a flexible band and music area tailored for their marching band, with dedicated spaces for instrument storage and concessions. The CBI classroom will teach vital life skills to special education students. We are eager to see this project serve as a valuable resource for its community. 🎵🏫 It was a great ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the new El Segundo High School Band and Community-Based Instruction Building and an exciting addition to the High School.  The 10,000 square-foot building will house the band program, concessions, and community-based instruction program. The new building integrates contemporary design elements with the campus aesthetic, providing much-needed space for music programs and creating an inviting gateway for students and visitors during football games. The 2018 Bond Measure ES has truly transformed the landscape of the EL SEGUNDO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT to build a better educational environment and education for all students. Congratulations ESHS – we can’t wait to see the Marching Band make their first grand entrance onto the football stadium! 🎺🏈 Go Eagles! As always, thanks to our project partners NAC Architects, Telacu Construction Management and The Nazarian Group. Special thanks to lead DSA Project Inspector Brian McCarthy of the Pringle Group. #esusd #eshs #schoolconstruction #dsa #dsainspector #buildingschools #elsegundo #pringlegroup

Statistics show that the highest predictor of lifelong success is early intervention and education. While early childhood education is crucial to positive lifelong development, where should it occur? Early childhood education is delivered in a wide range of environments and is often provided by school districts for students in their district. Sometimes those preschool rooms are part of a neighborhood elementary school, and sometimes students are served in a center dedicated to early learning curriculum. These are both school district run programs, so there should be no differences, right? Nope! In fact, there are several differences between programs within a neighborhood school versus early learning centers, serving students five and under.
