  • Beautiful community... We are beyond excited to share Kylie Flanagan's incredible new book (coming out next week on August 1st) with y'all! Climate Resilience is a collection of conversations with Native Rights activists, queer liberation ecologists, youth climate-justice organizers, Latinx wilderness activists, and others on the front lines. Including Mycelium Youth Network!! In yet another season of concerning weather events, it is easy (and so normalized) to feel defeat and doom against the changing climate. Holding onto and reigniting our collective hope can be exhausting when we stay siloed, when we are severed from the abundance of good work being done across scales to build a more resilient future. We are so grateful to Kylie for assembling these reminders of the knowledge and collective power we hold. From mutual aid, to seed-saving, to community-owned energy, to community safety plans, and more, this book will be packed with strategies and visions for resilience. It is an honor to be included in this conversation among fellow grassroots leaders, and shout out to Lil Milagro Henriquez-Cornejo, whose story is featured! PLEASE help us get the word out as we near the publication date! You can preorder your copy here: https://lnkd.in/emb8nKVG

A climate resilience organization in Oakland, CA—Mycelium Youth Network—recognizes the power of imagination to create change, transforming a popular role-playing game into Gaming for Justice in which players solve real-life environmental justice issues using critical thinking, problem-solving, and empathy. Aaaaannndddd, we're back!!! Check out Mycelium Youth Network's first story of 2024 in Columbia Climate School's State of the Planet. I wanted to shout out and hold down our amazing Lead Storyteller Marcy Brown who is not mentioned in this article but who is AMAZING and who has designed so many of our recent adventures. "Henriquez is part of a cohort of educators who are revamping traditional curricula for students through game-ified lessons that engage their critical thinking, problem-solving and empathy. In Gaming for Justice, youth are not only learning about issues related to climate justice but are also exploring the power of imagination and their potential impact on the world. It allows young people to explore things that might be very difficult in real life through the point of view of heroes or adventurers, according to Henriquez. Unlike thought experiments or simulations, Haarman said, role-play games like D&D encourage players to fully engage with their character and with other people, identify how emotions and relationships interact with players’ choices, and consider the consequences of all actions—just as they should in the real world. Haarman emphasized the need to recognize that young people are already playing these games, and if designed right, they can boast numerous educational benefits for a classroom. With rising climate change anxiety, it is crucial to find innovative ways to instill resilience in youth. When creating a character, players can transform themselves into anything they want to be. Becoming an ice-wielding elf or centuries-old wizard isn’t just about acquiring magical powers, but also about discovering your inner powers. Role-playing enables players to explore themselves and their own ideas or motivations too. For Generation Z (sometimes referred to as the climate generation), born into a world marked by rising temperatures and shrinkage of mountain glaciers, this presents an optimistic opportunity. “Gaming allows us to remove the barriers of the world as it is and imagine the world that we want it to be,” Henriquez said. “The line between let’s imagine the world we want to build, and let’s take active action in the world you want to build, is actually a very, very, very thin line.”

In honor of one of our own Collective Wins, we’re #ThrowingItBack to this piece our writing team wrote on our collaboration with Ten Strands and the San Mateo County Office of Education! Within this ongoing partnership, we are proud to be the only all PoC writing team co-creating innovative justice-oriented climate resilience curricula grounded in: intersectional frameworks, community stories, and a local-to-global orientation that prepares young people to build from and lean into the power of their mycelial connections. As people of color, our voices are instrumental in co-creating a vision for climate justice that lifts up perspectives not often included in state or national curriculum. Did we mention this resource will be open access for all educators to use?! As we continue to grow the mycelium network — from regional youth councils to the White House panel on #NCA5 we participated in last month, to every conversation seeking balms to climate doomism and real climate solutions — we always return to the question of who our work is accountable to. As Jomar, Maya, and Andrew write in this piece, our goal is to build climate resilient education as a “’practice of freedom,’ (hooks, 1994) cultivating spaces of shared learning where the entire community can make meaning of their lives as they are and organize for the lives they desire.” We encourage you to check out our reflection on the Ten Strands blog if you haven’t already, and let us know what you think! #ThrowbackThursday #EducationForThePeople #ClimateResilience #BIPOCTeachers #EducationForBIPOC #JusticeOriented #ClimateJustice https://lnkd.in/gSR48n9F

Thanks Bay Area Climate Adaptation Network for highlighting this moment!

🌍✨ Mycelium Youth Network at the White House: Advocating for Climate Action! 🏛️ Last week, BayCAN member Lil Milagro Henriquez represented Mycelium Youth Network on a White House panel discussing the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5). The report underscores the urgency of climate challenges and emphasizes the critical role of community-based organizations. Key Points: 🌡️ Climate change impacts human health and well-being. 🌱 Indigenous Knowledge is vital for climate adaptation. 🌎 Mitigation and adaptation actions are increasing across the U.S. 🏙️ Vulnerabilities of "overburdened communities" are highlighted. 🔄 Transformative adaptation is crucial for addressing climate risks. 🎨 NCA5 features an art gallery, recognizing the role of art and science. Lil highlighted how Mycelium Youth Network aligns its curriculum with the NCA5, aiming to make climate reports accessible to young people. She emphasized the need for increased financial investment and multi-sectoral partnerships to promote scalable and replicable solutions. Join the conversation using #NCA5 and #MyceliumYouthNetwork. Beautiful community, We are so proud to announce that our Executive Director, Lil Milagro Henriquez-Cornejo, has joined the Climate Communities Network, organized by the National Academy of Medicine! This inaugural cohort of 18 Members and 11 Strategic Partners will co-develop and drive local solutions to climate-related health inequities, and we are so proud to have the work of Mycelium Youth Network represented in this space. As the Fifth National Climate Assessment #NCA5 underscored just this month, "Climate change worsens these long-standing inequities [across adverse environmental, health, economic, or social conditions], contributing to persistent disparities in the resources needed to prepare for, respond to, and recover from climate impacts." It is crucial at this time that we invest in cross-sector, national-level partnerships, like CCN, to resource climate vulnerable communities to build up resilience to our changing reality. We hope you'll join us in celebrating this moment. Mycelium is grounded in the knowledge and experience of young folks, ancestral teachings, and the wisdom of the natural world, and we hope to bring this forward in the work ahead. Together with CCN, we will amplify community voices and living experiences and leverage community expertise to address the structural drivers of climate-related health inequities at the local level.

This month has been so beautiful and challenging for me personally and professionally. I was honored to be a panelist at the White House's launch of the 5th National Climate Assessment Report AND I was selected to serve on the National Academy of Medicine's Climate Communities Network as an inaugural Advisory Council member! Also, anytime I get to share space with Margot Brown I know it's going to be an amazing conversation! The NAM Climate Communities Network aims to shift power and provide a platform for communities disproportionately impacted by climate change. Together, we will amplify community voices and living experiences and leverage community expertise to address the structural drivers of climate-related health inequities at the local level. I'm so excited to represent Mycelium Youth Network as part of this inaugural effort. We had our kick off meeting a couple of weeks ago and I was so inspired by all the amazing work that is being done at a local and state level and I can't wait to see what happens when we connect the local to the federal level. I'm always thinking globally and acting locally. #ClimateActionForHealth #MyceliumYouthNetwork #CaliforniaAdapts #MyceliumMovement
