"While both Biden and Harris have called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians and address the dire humanitarian situation, Harris's tone, emphasis, and expressions of empathy stood out," writes Carol Daniel Kasbari, Ph.D. https://lnkd.in/da7ak_NF

Spoke with Sky News on the assassinations in Beirut and Tehran, and what they mean for Israel. While definitely regarded as significant operational achievements, many in Israel would like to see the escalation contained and leveraged towards a hostage release and ceasefire deal in Gaza, which will also enable to diffuse tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border https://lnkd.in/dS4eUdzt (Begins at 1:38:30)

“The killing of Hamas’s Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah’s commander Fouad Shukor will likely trigger a response involving Iran and its full array of regional militias. It shifts dynamics and undermines US-Iran back-channel negotiations trying to contain the escalation. Darker days ahead,” says MEI’s Firas Maksad on CNN.

The best case scenario, currently being worked through back channel diplomacy, would be a multi-day Israeli campaign to degrade Hezbollah in #Lebanon without forcing its hand into a major war, says MEI’s Firas Maksad to CNN on the latest escalation between #Israel and #Hezbollah.

Here is some personal news: I signed my first book contract with Polity. "West Asia" explores how the U.S. strategy towards the Middle East should change and focus on order-building as it pivots to Asia. The book is expansive in its geographical scope, viewing the Middle East as a system that stretches from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean. Security, technology, trade, connectivity, and the changing global balance of power are central to the arguments I make throughout the book. Grateful for my friends and colleagues who offered their advice and support throughout this process. Middle East Institute McLarty Associates
