Mass General Brigham is operational. Mass Eye and Ear is open and seeing patients. All scheduled appointments and procedures will happen as planned on Monday, July 22. Our response teams are continuing to work diligently throughout the weekend to address the many additional downstream impacts across our system from the CrowdStrike failure. We are grateful for the patience and understanding of our patients and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our staff who have worked tirelessly to respond to this extremely challenging incident. UPDATE: July 19 – 10:14 pm Mass General Brigham mobilized incident command and other leadership teams across the organization to manage our response to the CrowdStrike incident. As part of this response, we have also deployed hundreds of technicians to our hospitals, healthcare centers, and outpatient clinics to restore access to the systems and devices that were impacted by the software failure early this morning. The hard work since the very early hours by our response teams and staff allowed our clinics and emergency departments to remain open today for those with urgent health concerns, in addition to the many patients currently admitted in our hospitals. We are doing everything possible to restore the electronic systems that support our patient care delivery across our system. Our teams will continue to work throughout the night to implement solutions and, at this time, we expect to be operational tomorrow. We apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused to the many patients who had scheduled visits with us today. _____________ A major worldwide software outage has affected many of our systems at Mass General Brigham, as well as many major businesses across the country. Due to the severity of this issue, all previously scheduled non-urgent surgeries, procedures, and medical visits are canceled today. Mass Eye and Ear remains open to provide care to patients with urgent health concerns in our clinics and emergency departments, and we continue to care for all patients currently receiving care in our hospitals. We have dedicated every available resource to resolve this issue as quickly as possible, and we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused our patients. It is our highest priority to ensure that our patients receive the safest care possible.

Thanks to a generous gift of $1 million from the Ansin family, owners of 7 NEWS, WHDH-TV, Dr. Lee will develop new devices to aid those who aren't candidates for cochlear implants due to physical damage to their hearing systems. Elle Blaton, a cochlear implant recipient, says that Dr. Lee opened up her world and she's excited he's finding new ways to help others experience the world around them. http://spklr.io/6046SQm0

It's with great sadness that we share that Claes H. Dohlman, MD, PhD, former chief and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School and professor of Ophthalmology, Emeritus, passed away peacefully at the age of 101 on July 14th. Widely regarded as the founder of modern corneal science, Dr. Dohlman’s contributions to the field will live on – not only through his research and accolades, but also through the generosity, support and kindness he showed his patients, colleagues and trainees during his nearly 70-year career. “Dr. Dohlman’s pioneering research has forever changed the way conditions of the cornea are understood and treated,” says Joan W. Miller, MD, chair of Ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School. “His work has benefited millions of people around the world, and his legacy of knowledge thrives today in the hundreds of fellows, students, and colleagues he has trained and mentored over the years. Harvard Medical School—and indeed, the whole world—is a far better place today because of his remarkable talent, contributions, and character. He will continue to inspire all of us to greater accomplishment.” http://spklr.io/6043SsWc
