The groundbreaking of Pier B marks an important day for the future of Long Beach, signifying our dual commitment to both environmental and economic progress. This project will make our Port more economically competitive in the coming decades supporting 1 in 5 jobs in Long Beach, improve the health of residents, and create more than 1,100 quality union jobs through construction. I'm still inspired by the support we've received from the Biden-Harris administration for America's Green Gateway. Today, we welcomed U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to the City of Long Beach as we break ground on the biggest single federal investment into any port in America: The $1.5 billion Pier B On-Dock Rail project! Pier B will create more than 1,100 new union construction jobs. It will make the Port of Long Beach even more efficient than before. It will eliminate millions of miles worth of truck trips in the port each year. And, it will improve air quality for communities and families in West Long Beach and across the entire south coast air basin. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of President Biden’s Investing in America act. Thank you to all the local, state, and federal partners who joined hands to bring this to fruition.

Everyone deserves an affordable, stable place to live. That’s exactly my vision as newly elected Chair of the Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency (LACAHSA). Today, in my first meeting as chair, I outlined a clear strategic policy development agenda and vision to guide our board and executive team over the next 6-9 months, with 3 key areas of focus: Preventing Homelessness, Producing Housing, and Increasing Homeownership. That’s how, together, we’ll ensure that everyone has a place to call home. Thanks so much to Supervisor Holly Mitchell for your leadership as inaugural Chair. I’m excited to take the next step with the incredible LACAHSA team.

We kicked off the Level UP LB: Extreme Small Business Makeover program this morning! I announced this program at the State of the City in January as another way that the City of Long Beach is helping to propel small businesses toward success and sustainability. Select small businesses participating in the program will earn a $10,000 grant once they finish—that’s real money they can put towards expansions, upgrades, and improvements. Congratulations to the dozens of participants. We can’t wait to see what you do next.
