Even before the release of ChatGPT, the AI boom was building for years through several key foundational research discoveries. These research findings laid the groundwork for some of today’s top AI companies and new innovation ecosystems. At Lightspeed, we have been close observers of AI research over the past decade and we have backed pioneering startups built upon the research findings, such as Mistral AI, Snorkel AI, and Skild AI. Our latest blog highlights the most influential AI research papers by examining their impact on today's startup landscape. We break down how these papers have shaped the journey from researchers to startup founders, and transformed institutions into hubs of AI innovation. Through this lens, we found four key research waves that have propelled AI to its current state: → Model Architecture Improvements → Developer Productivity Gains → Task Execution → Compute Optimization For a deep dive into the historical arc of AI research and to explore the next wave of innovative startups developed from this foundation, read our latest insights here: https://lnkd.in/d3JXEXk7

Lightspeed is excited to share that we're co-leading the $140 million Series C round in Chainguard, a company on a mission to secure open source with the advancements of AI. Open source has transformed software development, but without proper enterprise-level security support engineers are often forced to focus on patching vulnerabilities instead of innovating. Chainguard products are built to solve security problems for engineers and allow them to become more efficient with their time. This level of security and work efficiency is now even more of a demand and need for companies with the growth of AI and other new technologies. We know Chainguard’s Co-Founders, Dan Lorenc, Matt Moore, Kim Lewandowski, and Ville Aikas, are uniquely set up to understand and solve the problems with open source security. We look forward to partnering with them on this big milestone as they work towards the next major shift in technology.
