Scholarship Providers - please STOP cancelling a student's funding when they struggle! That's when they need MORE support, not LESS. I cannot even count the number of striving students that come to Last Mile Education Fund for financial help because: "I lost my scholarship because my GPA dropped slightly." or "I got sick and had to drop a class and lost my scholarship." or "I was on academic probation, so wasn't eligible for financial aid." College can be challenging, even for the most prepared students. GPA is not an indication of potential. Students from low-income families disproportionately: -attended lower-resourced high schools without higher level math courses, hence less prepared for college level math-dependent courses. -must work to support themselves, hence have less time available for academics, attending study groups, going to office hours. -are often dealing with stressful family obligations that pull their attention and time away from schoolwork. At Last Mile Education Fund we take an abundance-based investment approach to student support and it works! Please reconsider your approach. A struggling but striving student is a great investment, and they also develop resilience and learn to persist through challenges.
