Landau Associates helps our clients balance the need for conservation with the need for growth. One of our newest services is shrubsteppe habitat evaluations.     Shrubsteppe is an arid, sagebrush community found in Eastern Washington that was recently identified as a priority habitat under the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife’s Priority Habitat and Species Program. As one of Washington’s most diverse ecosystems, shrubsteppe provides habitat for endemic species such as greater sage-grouse, pygmy rabbits, and burrowing owls. With an estimated 80% of Washington’s historic shrubsteppe degraded, protecting the remaining habitats is more crucial than ever.     If you are planning a project in Eastern Washington, reach out to Landau’s experts to help with your environmental study and permitting needs. #environmentalpermitting #shrubsteppe #collaborationresponsivenessquality

From paleontology to geology — it’s not always a hard rock life being a geologist! The recent Whidbey Island geology field trip was a success. Thanks Sam Bartish for leading the trip and being an excellent field guide for Landau staff members. This annual field trip brought the team together to explore the deposits of several Puget Lowland glacial and interglacial sequences, combined with very pleasant beach walks of “The Rock” and the rubble of West Beach, Strawberry Point, and Double Bluff. Come be a part of our team! We’re hiring; see our current openings here www.landauinc.com/careers/ #PNWGeology #therock #landaulife #collaborationresponsivenessquality

Senior Project Engineer at Landau Associates

This year, I got the opportunity to attend our (nearly) annual geology field trip, where some of Landau Associates' best geologists take interested employees to a part of Washington state to learn about local #geology. Ten of us jumped into a van early on a beautiful Saturday morning in June to travel to a few beaches on Whidbey Island where bluffs are present. These bluffs provide a unique window into the ancient past of the Puget Sound. Not only did I learn a ton about geology, glaciations, and depositional environments, I got to bond with some coworkers through shared interests and shared conversation (and a few shared beers). It was awesome. ( 📸 from left to right: West Beach, Strawberry Point, Double Bluff, our group chatting about diamicts and unconformities).

Imagine unearthing dinosaur fossils never before seen! Landau’s very own Tim Quarles, citizen scientist and Principal with our air quality team, did just that. He helped assistant professor of geology, museum curator of Mace Brown Museum of Natural History, and longtime colleague Scott Persons and his Paleo Field Class students at College of Charleston explore the world of dinosaurs and marine reptiles in the high desert of Glenrock and surrounding areas of Wyoming. The three-week adventure led to several discoveries, including unearthing species of dinosaurs new to science that will be researched and become a part of the Glenrock Paleontological Museum’s collection. With an old map, where literally an “X” marked the spot, Allan Barton with Landau’s GIS team, in real-time via GPS and cell phone, helped navigate the team to a triceratops dig site that had been lost over the decades. This site is where the founding fossil, a Triceratops skull over 70 million years old, was found. Its discovery facilitated the opening of the Glenrock Paleontological Museum in 1995. The team was able to confirm that no other fossils were in the lost dig site. “It was an honor to be invited to take part in the exploration of old and new dig sites and assist a fellow colleague and students in support of this small museum’s scientifically important collection and research in Glenrock,” noted Tim.  #dinasourdigs #worldofdinosaurs #explorediscoverconnect #paleontology
