About us
Founded in 1964, the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research (CHR) is focused on advancing knowledge to improve health. With 33 investigators, approximately 200 staff members, and annual revenues of more than $45 million, we pursue a vigorous agenda of public health research within large, diverse populations. Most of our funding comes from federal grants and contracts. We also receive support from Kaiser Permanente’s Community Health Initiative, private foundations, and industry. Our research scientists are a highly diverse and skilled group with specialties ranging from cancer to genetics and genomics to health economics to epidemiology. Centralized departments provide the infrastructure and expertise necessary to support our investigators as they write grant proposals, conduct studies, analyze data, and publish their findings. Our close affiliation with the Kaiser Permanente delivery system allows us to conduct studies with real patients and health care providers in real-life settings. KP Northwest enrolls more than 500,000 health plan members and 200,000 dental members in Oregon and Southwest Washington. In addition, we cultivate strong working partnerships with academic institutions, community organizations, and other health systems. Do you know a cancer survivor? You can honor them today by joining Connect, a research study exploring what causes cancer and how to prevent it. Connect will help future researchers, like Aleah Thomas from National Cancer Institute (NCI), learn more about the causes of cancer so we can better prevent it, detect it earlier, and improve treatment outcomes. Our research center is full of women just like Allison Naleway who are experts in their respective fields, contributing to the science that improves healthcare not just for KP members, but for all.
Allison Naleway, PhD, is just one of the many female researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research. The vaccine safety and effectiveness team she helps lead also includes many women who make contributions to the science every day. “I am incredibly proud to stand alongside the women conducting vital research at Kaiser Permanente. The women who work here are leading and contributing to lifesaving and life-enhancing research every day. I am so happy to be a part of it.” During #womenshistorymonth, we celebrate women like Allison, who inspire others and pave the way for success.

Genetic counselors help patients navigate through #genetictesting, and once complete, the counselors also help deliver and discuss the results - including translating the results and explaining next steps. But their role extends far beyond. Read more about the work of two of our own #geneticcounselors and learn about how they contribute to our research and the health of our members and their families.
