INTERCEDE project
Environmental Services
Horizon Europe project incentivising future forest ecosystem services and incomes in Europe
About us
INTERCEDE - Incentivising future forest ecosystem services and incomes in Europe - is an ongoing Horizon Europe project (March 2024 - February 2028) aiming to enhance the value of Europe’s forests to Europe’s citizens by identifying and upscaling market-based instruments, developing policy frameworks and guidelines, and reducing the gap between high-level research and policy and practice. INTERCEDE is breaking new ground by examining future supply and demand for forest ecosystem services and looking for effective Market-Based Instruments that offer forest and land managers viable options to manage forests to provide these services. INTERCEDE seeks to connect with projects, initiatives, researchers, and anyone interested in forest ecosystem services to share results and activities. Together, we can contribute to enhance the provision forest ecosystem service in Europe!

Economic indicators such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) don't reflect nature's value. Here's why we need to talk about Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) 👇 Ecosystem services such as: 🐝 Crop pollination 💧 Water purification 🌳 Climate regulation contribute to the economy both directly and indirectly. However, the GDP shows the total value of output/income generated in a country, but it does not capture fully the contributions of nature to economic activity. In a context of #ClimateChange and #biodiversity loss, it is crucial to stimulate #ForestOwners to improve their #ForestManagement: economic incentives such as payments for #EcosystemServices (PES) could help to better align supply & demand for #forest environmental services! How can we make these #PES work effectively? This European Forest Institute policy brief by Sven Wunder includes recommendations such as: 🔹 Differentiating payments, rather than paying the same per hectare, household or village; 🔹 Paying for environmental results (eg increased biodiversity) rather than actions (eg changed forest management); 🔹 Ensuring provider compliance; & many more insights on preconditions and best practices! 🔎🌲👩🌾 Dive into this policy brief distilling years of accumulated knowledge on what it take to put a functional PES scheme into place! ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dgKb6QVN
Our new policy brief by Sven Wunder explores what it takes to put a functional PES scheme into place, and once working, how we can design and implement PES to achieve the best impacts.

✨🌿🌲 At #INTERCEDE, project we will work on enhancing forest #EcosystemServices in Europe, but what are they exactly? #Forest ecosystem services are the myriad of benefits that #forests provide us, including: 🔹 #climate mitigation 🌡 🔹 #biodiversity protection 🦋 🔹 #water flow regulation 💧 🔹 recreational and cultural services 🎒 🔹 #health benefits 🧘♀️ 🔹 & many more! Across Europe, we are used to expect multiple benefits and services from our #forests, without always realising that our demands may be conflicting or that forests might provide more such services given the chance to realise their full potential. INTERCEDE will break new ground by examining future supply and demand for #ForestEcosystemServices and looking for effective #MarketBasedInstruments that offer #ForestOwners and managers viable options to manage forests to provide these services! 🌲🌿🎉 Exciting news: we are thrilled to announce that the #INTERCEDE project is now on LinkedIn 🎉🌿🌲 🧐 What is INTERCEDE all about? Kicked off in March 2024, this #HorizonEurope project aims to enhance the value of Europe’s #forests to Europe’s citizens! We will work to foster #EcosystemServices provision in Europe through the development of novel policies and instruments to support #ForestOwners. 🌟 Why does it matter? Forests provide a myriad of benefits to people, including #climate mitigation, #biodiversity protection, #water flow regulation, and cultural and health services. At INTERCEDE, we will target the potential of market-based approaches as incentives to manage forests to provide these valuable services. 🤝 Who's with us? The project is coordinated by Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen and has a consortium of 13 project partners including European Forest Institute, Wageningen University & Research, KU Leuven, CTFC, Università degli Studi di Padova, Prospex Institute vzw, Etifor | Valuing Nature, Fachhochschule Eberswalde, Universitatea „Ștefan cel Mare” din Suceava, Land Life, WWF Bulgaria, European Landowners' Organization.
