In 1965, the International Institute of Boston and its allies finally claimed victory after the Immigration and Nationality Act was passed into law, paving the way for immigrants from Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. 📜 Learn more about how the International Institute of Boston continued to welcome refugees and immigrants from around the world, expanded their language classes, and honored notable citizens who immigrated to the U.S. in the sixth installment of our series, “100 Years of Welcome: Commemorating IINE’s Boston Centennial.” Read the blog: https://hubs.li/Q02JDnYQ0 #bostoncentennial #IINEBostonCentennial #100yearsofwelcome #IINEBoston100 #immigrantstories #immigrantswelcome

Welcoming refugees and serving immigrants since 1918
About us
Mission The International Institute of New England (IINE) creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed through resettlement, education, career advancement and pathways to citizenship. History and Context Founded in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1918, IINE is one of the region’s largest and oldest service providers for new Americans. The International Institute serves 2,000 refugees and immigrants each year and has launched new programs to double the number of newcomers served to 4,000 within five years. In the past year, staff in our Boston, Lowell, and Manchester (NH) field offices provided resettlement, family reunification, education, career assistance, and legal services to people from 67 different countries. As the United States engages in a pitched debate about immigration policy, our work is critical to preserving the nation’s tradition of welcoming people of all backgrounds who cherish freedom, equality and hard work. IINE’s programs are particularly important to New England, which has a notable dependence on immigrant labor to grow its economy.

The 5-day stay limit "sends a message that you’re not welcome in Massachusetts...And that’s not a good message, given the fact that we need people in our state right now to work, live, and grow the economy,” IINE President and CEO Jeff Thielman told GBH reporter Sarah Betancourt as immigrant families face immense pressure to find stable housing with extremely limited time. Immigrants coming to the Commonwealth are eager to work and build a new life in their communities, but need time and resources to do so. The leaders of tomorrow ✨ Last year seven of our talented refugee youth clients were selected as Massachusetts’ Council Members for the Office of Refugee Resettlement’s Youth Leadership Council for Refugees and Newcomers (ORRYLCRN). The Council is an initiative of ORR to learn more about the lived experience of the youth that ORR serves. In June, five youth from IINE and one youth from the New American Association of Massachusetts traveled to D.C. to visit national sites; meet with political officials, directors of federal departments, and State Refugee Congress Delegates; and present to panelists on issues and solutions relevant to their experiences as refugees as part of the ORRYLCRN Washington, D.C. Summit. All youth council members received a certificate for their participation in the Council and Summit. This opportunity significantly strengthened our youth clients’ leadership skills and motivated them to achieve their goals and make a meaningful impact in their communities. 🌟 📸Check out pictures from their meaningful trip and read more about their experience in The Lowell Sun: https://hubs.li/Q02Jg79f0 #youthrefugees #refugeeyouth #refugeeleaders #youthleaders #youthleadership #youngrefugees #refugeeempowerment

This field visit to El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico was critical to understanding the experiences of the growing number of asylum seekers in our services. In speaking with asylum seekers, civil society members, and government officials alongside U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), we have learned about the challenges our clients face to reach the border and the confusion they experience while navigating legal pathways to enter the U.S. This joint project between the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) titled “Las Mariposas de la Frontera” aims to uplift the voices of asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border and advocate for their rights. Watch the video preview of interviews conducted during the field visit below. #usmexicoborder #usmexico #asylumseekers #asylum #immigrants #immigrantrights #immigrantstories #givevoice #Frontera #fronteramexicousa
Las Mariposas de la Frontera is a joint project between the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) and the International Institute of New England. IINE accompanied USCRI on part of a field visit to the U.S.-Mexico border. The team spoke with asylum seekers, civil society members, and government officials. U.S. externalization policies force asylum seekers and migrants to stay in Mexico where they face kidnappings, extortion, and other risks. This video previews the interviews conducted during the field visit and upcoming advocacy efforts of the Las Mariposas project, aimed at uplifting the voices of asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“After that presentation, I mean, I feel like something has changed in my life...someone could become a leader, just by doing simple things,” said Ungaye Izaki, a young refugee from Tanzania and IINE client who recently joined other Youth clients to represent Massachusetts in D.C., as part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Refugee Resettlement Youth Leadership Council program. Our Youth clients met fellow refugee representatives and discussed key issues with senior officials. Read the full MassLive.com article to learn more about their experience: https://lnkd.in/g4tT3yzu

“Five days in an overflow shelter is not enough time to make a plan for where to go next,” IINE President & CEO Jeff Thielman told WFXT Boston 25 News following Governor Healey's announcement about new changes to the state’s emergency shelter system effective August 1. The changes would disproportionately affect immigrant families, who are awaiting work authorization and are eager to put down roots and contribute, but need initial support.
