AI-generated images are becoming more realistic than ever, sometimes blurring the lines of what's real versus fake. Generative AI has a plethora of useful applications, though experts are concerned that the technology could be used for deceptive practices—particularly when real-life situations are depicted inaccurately. What can be done to combat potentially harmful fake images? Ironically, researchers see different AI models as a promising solution. “Earlier this year, we delved into enhancing WIE-industry engagement at the #IEEE R10 Women in Engineering Industry Forum. The inspiring stories of female professionals drove our focus on career growth, skill-building, and community support to combat gender disparities and encourage females in STEM. Let's keep pushing for equal opportunities and women in leadership.” - Tom Coughlin, 2024 IEEE President & CEO

From secret mini-games to witty hidden tricks, "Easter eggs" are proof that technology can have a playful side. Easter eggs began to appear in the 1970s as developers began to hide clever functionalities in video games, applications and operating systems. The term was coined as an analogy to a real-world Easter egg hunt, as these secret features were often tricky to find, requiring an undocumented set of commands to unlock. Have you encountered an Easter egg? Share your favorite discovery in the comments below!

As we move toward the electrification of transportation, it may come as a surprise that electric vehicles (EVs) appeared long before their gas-powered counterparts. In the 1830s, inventors sought to replace the traditional horse and carriage with battery-powered motors. These early models could only travel approximately 1.4 miles at 4mph until the battery needed to be replaced. After the invention of rechargeable batteries, EVs started to gain critical mass in the later part of the century, becoming a preferred option among urban dwellers because of their low noise levels and minimal pollution.

Though we strive for perfection, imperfection is a far greater catalyst toward innovation and discovery. In science and engineering, imperfection pushes us to look beyond the obvious and find solutions to questions that we haven't even thought of. Navigating imperfection helps form our understanding of the world and inspires critical thinking and creativity that could lead to a major breakthrough.
