Can you imagine the struggle of trying to find a stable home for yourself and your child? Or searching for affordable housing while undergoing cancer treatment? Unfortunately, these are the realities for many of our fellow Tulsans. This Tulsa World article uses the most recent data to challenge the prevalent myth that people are bussed into Tulsa for our homeless services. The findings reveal that most individuals facing homelessness are actually our own residents—our colleagues, friends, and family. This is not merely an individual's battle; it’s a broad community issue that touches many aspects of our lives. Homelessness demands a compassionate, collective response, not judgment. As professionals and leaders in our community, we have the responsibility and the resources to spearhead change and foster solutions that uphold the dignity of every Tulsa resident. Let's come together to discuss and implement sustainable solutions that address the root causes and support our neighbors in need. https://lnkd.in/gip2VXfU

In a recent TulsaPeople Magazine interview, Elliot Nelson, founder of McNellie's Group, highlighted what he wants to focus on next, specifically affordable housing. “If [affordable housing] is one of the greatest issues facing our city and society at large in the coming years, I think it’s going to be interesting to lean in and help figure it out.” This perspective emphasizes that affordable housing is more than just shelter; it's about creating stability, opportunity, and community. Business owners have a unique opportunity to drive meaningful change in Tulsa.

We are excited to see how this work will help Tulsans in need. Thank you Downtown Tulsa Partnership and Ascension St. John for working together to be part of the solution for reducing homelessness in our city.

Urban place management and downtown development practitioner building relationships between people and place.

Another example of how Downtown Tulsa Partnership is continuously evolving to meet the needs of our community. Amidst the growing number of unsheltered individuals in our Downtown last year, we pitched a pilot idea to Ascension St. John to embed an outreach worker in our Ambassador Team to have a sharper focus on those in need. In the few months Toni has been on board as our Outreach Coordinator, it's proven to be *complicatedly* successful. We are focused on supporting a person's transition from unsheltered conditions into housing and it's complicated because that path to housing looks different for each unique individual and may take a detour to rehabilitation or a shelter. Toni has gotten to know a boisterous Downtown neighbor who often resided in a Downtown park and was a regular presence at our events. Toni had been working with him from the time she joined the organization, building a relationship and continuously talking with him until he was ready to accept her help. She worked with AWH4T partner agencies to find a space at an inpatient rehabilitation center for addiction. I learned on Monday that he's exiting the program this week and reuniting with his family. DTP is committed to advocating for and partnering with those committed to the systemic changes Tulsa and Oklahoma need to to make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring. We also see there's a person behind each statistic and will continue deploying a people-centric approach to this work. We are grateful to Ascension St. John for their financial support of this pilot program. DTP is reliant upon private funding to undertake initiatives and services like this so please reach out if you are interested in supporting our mission and expanding our reach. cc: Block by Block
