Animal testing is key to many scientific discoveries, but segments of the industry are overshadowed by unethical practices, like illegal wildlife trafficking and mistreatment of test subjects. CRO, Charles River, is moving in a different direction and has launched a new program to reduce animal testing in drug discovery. The program will invest in Artificial Intelligence and other similar technologies to make “alternative testing methods more acceptable to regulators.” Source: https://hubs.li/Q02CHb0m0 #CharlesRiverLaboratories #AnimalTesting #ContractResearchOrganization #CRO #AnimalTesting #ArtificialIntelligence #DrugDiscovery #Research #Biotech #DrugResearch

The FDA recently approved the Apple Watches’ atrial fibrillation tracking features for clinical studies. This is big news, as it’s the first technology to qualify for the agency’s Medical Device Development Tools program. The FDA says, “The AppleAFib History Feature can help address the challenges of patient compliance, potential placebo effects, and the technical difficulties without an implantable device by allowing for passive, opportunistic AFib burden estimation in a wearable form that is already familiar to Apple Watch users.” Source: https://hubs.li/Q02CHhpV0 #Apple #AppleWatch #AtrialFibrillation #FDA #ClinicalResearch #Biomarkers #AFib #MedicalDeviceDevelopmentToolsProgram #WearableTechnology #RemoteMonitoring #RWE

Women-Owned Wednesday! We’re recognizing the accomplishments of Kono Yasui, a Japanese biologist and cytologist who was the first Japanese woman to earn a doctoral degree in science. Yasui’s research focused on the genetics of poppies and corn. In 1945, she began a survey of plants affected by the nuclear fallout of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings. Yasui passed away in 1971 at the age of 91, but her career and legacy remain a shining example to a whole generation of young women scientists. At the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting, cancer vaccines were all the buzz. Although these vaccines can’t prevent cancer altogether, they may significantly reduce the risk of severe outcomes in certain patient populations. A decade ago, the idea of an effective cancer vaccine would’ve seemed preposterous, but that’s all changed, thanks to advances in part to mRNA vaccines and other cell-based technologies. This article from Fierce Biotech highlights where these therapies currently stand and what to expect in the future. Today’s outage/interruption of service is a great reminder for us in the clinical trials industry about the importance of business continuity and testing business continuity plans. As an industry, we rely quite heavily on cloud-based technology that is managed by large technology companies such as Microsoft and accept the redundancy, replication, and security infrastructure they provide. We also accept that these companies refuse to be audited by individual companies and provide us with a series of reports demonstrating their risk management practices. Clearly, today’s incident shows that large companies are not perfect and subject to outages and vendor management issues which lead to disruption. Given that, we need to remain vigilant about business continuity and ensure our technology solutions that support our clinical trials can withstand disruption like observed today with no impact on patient safety and minimal experience for clinical trial patients. #businesscontinuity #biotechnology
