Conversations on contraceptives aren’t as much conversations but whispers with pharmacists, teachers, friends, parents, and even partners. Like many other reproductive and sexual health conversations, they are shrouded in secrecy, shame and guilt. And for many, these conversations may never happen at all, as contraception is a choice only for those who can afford it. In many countries, especially in Africa, South Asia and Central Asia, contraceptives, especially newer contraceptives like injectables, aren’t free or subsidised. If we are to move the needle on sexual and reproductive health indicators, we need to have more conversations that 1) respect the right of a woman to make a choice for if and when they want children; 2) democratise the choice of contraceptives by making the entire gamut of contraceptives affordable or free - this also means supporting local manufacturing of contraceptives to reduce costs; and 3) recognising that sexual and reproductive health is not just family planning, but much more. US is one of the biggest funders of UNFPA and other such related programs. Hoping, the US elections gives us leaders that allow women to make their own choices and #havetheconversation.
Conversations around reproductive health are still taboo in many communities, leading to myths & misconceptions around contraceptive use. This prevents women from making informed decisions about their health, their lives and their livelihoods. It’s time for open conversation around all the contraceptive options available to women.
