CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Youth Participatory Action Research The Michigan Journal of Commmunity Service Learning {MJCSL), published by the Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning, is pleased to invite proposals for a special section focused on Centering Youth in Youth Participatory Action Research (Volume 30, Issue 2). Proposals due December 1, 2023. This special section is guest edited by -Joanne E. Marciano, Ed.D., Assistant Professor of English Education, Michigan State University -Katie Richards-Schuster, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Strategic Initiatives and Associate Professor of Social Work, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor -Vaughn W. M. Watson, Ed.D. Associate Professor of Secondary English Education, Michigan State University This themed issue of the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning centers Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) as a promising approach for building with and extending the interplay of youths’ voices, perspectives, and intersectional identities as youth enact contemporary movements toward justice in the on-going work of and quest for social justice (Marciano & Watson, 2021; Richards-Schuster et al., 2021; Watson & Petrone, 2020). Specifically, we welcome renderings within and across contexts of service learning that foreground such participatory approaches, referred to most commonly as YPAR but also in some cases as Youth Participatory Evaluation or Youth Participatory Research and Evaluation. Call for Youth Contributions: In addition to the above call, we invite youth authors (ages 15-24) to share their experiences with YPAR in a range of genres (i.e., writing, poetry, photography, art, drama, and music) to be spotlighted on the MJCSL blog. These submissions will not be part of the peer review process. Learn more and submit proposals here https://lnkd.in/eW8dKz_X More on the journal here: https://lnkd.in/gVF6P7PY

Learn more about Surabhi's experience with the Community Engaged Course Design Workshop (Formerly Engaged Pedagogy Initiative). Application open now!
Meet Surabhi Balachander, Rackham Ph.D. candidate (University of Michigan Department of English) and Community Engaged Course Design Workshop participant. Learn more about Surabhi's experience with this semester-long workshop with Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning and Rackham Program in Public Scholarship in this Q&A! Q. Surabhi, how did participating in the Community Engaged Course Design Workshop shape your approach to teaching? A. I participated in this workshop while I was teaching English 126, a community-engaged first-year writing course, for the first time. It was a massive source of support to regularly discuss both theoretical and practical concerns about community-engaged coursework with the CSED community throughout the semester. Q. How did the Community Engaged Course Design Workshop help you grow professionally as an instructor and scholar? A. The workshop combined theoretical readings on pedagogy with practical tips and regular feedback on materials. This combination equipped me to not only design future community-engaged courses, but be a better colleague and mentor to others who want to pursue community engagement. Q. How did participating in the Community Engaged Course Design Workshop enhance your graduate studies? A. Aside from the things I've already mentioned, it was a good chance to connect with grad students from a variety of disciplines, and I really enjoyed getting to know Dr. Neeraja Aravamudan, Ginsberg Center director, and Joseph Cialdella, assistant director of Rackham Professional Development and Engagement team.
