Creating an inclusive community to leverage tech for public goods.

About us

GTPI fosters a community among Georgetown University students and key stakeholders at the intersection of technology and public goods. We believe that the future of technology is a collaborative decision that engages people from all backgrounds - policymakers, lawyers, technologists, and community organizers. We host events and connect students to representatives from government, industry, academia, and civil society who work in the civic tech space. We explore questions such as: "What role does technology play in society & public services? What are the societal implications? How do we think about & manage the externalities of tech?" If you are interested in GTPI, sign up to receive updates on our events and job opportunities in the civic tech space! https://tinyurl.com/gutechpolicy

  • At our enlightening Feb 6th dinner salon, we also had the privilege of hearing from Francella, an esteemed attorney and technology policy expert dedicated to fostering digital citizenship. Francella captivated us with her deep dive into the "Economic Consequences and Generational Impact of the Digital Divide," highlighting how outdated monopolistic principles from the telephone era have shaped today's broadband landscape, favoring limited competition and creating unequal power dynamics. Her analysis revealed a stark correlation between income levels and broadband access, underscoring the persistent digital divide across different states, regardless of their economic status. This divide not only mirrors but exacerbates existing inequalities, affecting primarily low-income and racially marginalized communities. Francella made a compelling case for digital equity, articulating how it could transform society by boosting economic efficiency, enhancing productivity and competition, lowering public service delivery costs, supporting a more agile workforce, and bolstering economic resilience. #digitalequity #digitaldivide #techpolicy
