Knowledge-Based Digital Twins Benefit Biopharma Process Developers Most digital twins use empirical models created from observed relationships between process inputs and outputs, providing insights into the behavior of a production process without the need for in-depth understanding, in theory making them more straightforward to build. While this fits with ideas like Quality by Design, it is more labor intensive than it needs to be, and hybrid models may be a better option.

Toxic Aggregates Shunted from Neurons to Microglia via Nanotubes A clearance mechanism involving microglia has been known to relieve neurons of toxic protein aggregates such as those associated with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. The study was led by Michael T. Heneka, MD, director of the Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) at the University of Luxembourg.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Organoid Study Points to Early Neurodevelopmental Defects There is presently no cure for spinal muscular atrophy, although current therapies can alleviate symptoms. In their search for improved therapeutic strategies scientists at German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) and the Technische Universität Dresden investigated previously unnoticed abnormalities in embryonic development. Their studies using a spinal cord organoid system and other experimental approaches pointed to the possibility that early neurodevelopmental defects may underlie later motor neuron degeneration.

Deep Learning without Compromising Confidentiality “Antibody production and formulation is expensive so it’s costly to generate datasets,” Pin-Kuang Lai, PhD, at the Stevens Institute of Technology explains. “A second challenge is data can’t be easily shared, even if a drug candidate is not in the pipeline because of intellectual property considerations. Researchers in New Jersey have developed a machine learning model for estimating the viscosity of monoclonal antibody (mAb) formulations in collaboration with AstraZeneca.
