During St. Josephine Bakhita’s years as doorkeeper, Italians were taken by her cheerful demeanor. But the horrors of slavery troubled her the rest of her life. Her final years were marred by sickness. In a fevered state, she once pleaded with a nurse to loosen the chains that bound her wrists. But she never lost her belief in God. https://lnkd.in/g3Vhqk-T

In October 2023, nine men were appointed to serve as the first Provincial Council of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe. During the next three years, they will focus on helping the friars embrace a Franciscan culture of encounter and renewal. We will be introducing to each of them in this video series. First up, our Provincial Minister: Br. Larry Hayes. Becoming a friar has been in Br. Larry's heart since he was a young boy and now is blessed with being part of the Provincial Council. 5 ways St. Francis would improve how we hire 🙏 St. Francis of Assisi is known for his care for the poor, his respect for creation, and for founding the Order of Friars Minor 800 years ago. Although he lived in the 1200s, we can learn a lot from how he lived – including how to improve the hiring process. If you are charged with vetting and hiring additions to your team, consider these five Franciscan characteristics to help treat job seekers with dignity and respect. 1. Wish people ‘peace and all good.’ St. Francis greeted people with this saying to wish them the fullness of wellbeing and acknowledge their dignity. Candidates are people in transition, which can be stressful. Treat them as more than resumes. Ask them about themselves while interviewing. We all get the best results when we’re at ease. 2. Respect the dignity of the individual. Are five rounds of interviews necessary? Can you personalize rejection letters? Even if their future is not with you, you can help candidates feel that you care. It could be just the message they need. 3. Be all-inclusive. How accessible is your hiring process to those with disabilities? Are you reaching the widest possible audience in your job posting spots? What are you doing to eliminate bias from the candidate selection process? Candidates often bring qualities that aren’t easily quantified on a resume. Delve into their unique experience and learn more about their work’s impact by asking about it. 4. Do unto others. No matter what role you play in the hiring process, never forget that you were a jobseeker once. Give grace to the slight faux pas or gap in experience. We have all wondered what we could do if given the chance. 5. Proclaim joy and hope. Be the company people want to work for. Convey this in how you structure and conduct interviews. Even in the most laborious search, your crew can demonstrate the values on which your company stands. A joyful workplace will attract and retain people and encourage them to grow with your company. St. Francis’ values are carried on today by the Franciscans and the people who work and volunteer with them. What will candidates remember from interviewing with your company? And what values does your team bring to the process?
