Chronic absenteeism has doubled since the pandemic. In 2022, nearly 16 million students missed almost four weeks of class, leaving educators urgently seeking new ways to keep students in school. Our clients, Children's Aid, are on the frontlines of solutions. Check out this new opinion piece by Phoebe Boyer, President and CEO of Children’s Aid, on how community schools are finding unique solutions to the absenteeism crisis – from success mentors to washing machines to walking school buses. I’m learning to sit in the space between hope and grief. As we celebrate the historic possibility of having a Black woman president, we are also confronted with the heartbreaking reality of Sonya Massey’s death, another Black woman senselessly killed by police. While we rejoice in the strides being made toward representation and leadership, we cannot ignore the systemic injustices that enable police violence and a system that harms rather than heals. As we hold onto the hope for a brighter future, let us channel our grief into fighting for a world where the next Sonya Massey will be treated with the dignity and care she deserved.

Up to one in four adults in the U.S. have a mental or physical disability. July is Disability Pride Month, a prime opportunity for advocacy organizations to honor the history and successes of people with disabilities and raise awareness of their myriad challenges. Disability Pride began as a day, July 26, the anniversary of the milestone Americans with Disabilities Act, enacted in 1990 to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities. People with disabilities are often not included in discussions of diversity, equity and inclusion. But it’s crucial to know that the barriers and challenges they face by people with disabilities are different than those faced by people of color, LGBTQIA+ people, or others who face discrimination. Fenton’s People and Identity Style Guide includes a section on Ableness, Disability, and Health, which includes key terms and recommendations for using language that includes and acknowledges the viewpoints and experiences of people with disabilities. https://lnkd.in/eFQN6XRm

All young people need communities to lift them and believe in them. To counter the inequity and stereotypes that create obstacles for youth, members of our team, Amanda Ebrahim, Allison Domínguez, Jennifer Hahn, and Shakirah A. Hill Taylor, spent the day with youth advocates from Baltimore at the Annie E. Casey Foundation to develop and promote a new narrative for thriving youth. We shared opinion research and evidence-based messages and workshopped with local leaders on how to tell stories, use social media, and give interviews that tackle misconceptions and educate the public about how young people can thrive when communities support them. Learn more about how we work with clients to shift narrative: https://fenton.com/work/
