A great HBR article on three common management myths that leaders embrace that could ultimately derail their companies’ growth. The Myths Summarized: (1) Scaling Without Hierarchy: The idea that keeping the organization flat as possible is somehow better than organizational hierarchy. (2) Structural Harmony: The idea that conflict is something to be avoided at all costs, instead striving for complete harmony. (3) Sustained Heroics: The idea that heroic efforts (working 20 hours a day, exceptionalism, etc.) are something you can institutionalize at a company. My experience tells me the authors are spot on and I appreciate the balanced approach to each of these myths. My Bottom Line: The root of these myths is based on the leader’s attempts to maintain “the spirit of the startup phase” to an extreme, thus resulting in stunted growth and development. Leaders must find a way to maintain the spirit of what made their company special, while acknowledging that, like a child, it must be allowed to grow and evolve into a healthy, high functioning adult. I’ve worked closely with leaders to do this very thing. It’s not easy. But if the leader is committed, it can unlock “next level” growth.
