Sometimes the best people for the job come from entirely different backgrounds. Take Spencer, for example. He didn't come from our industry but from a high-level recruiting and technology background. His approach to recruiting is nothing short of a system—a system that he applies rigorously to every role. And guess what? It works. Spencer dives deep into each position, analyzing every detail. This rinse-and-repeat methodology has led to short-term wins we never thought possible so quickly. In a world where industry experience is often seen as the golden ticket, Spencer’s ability to quickly adapt and excel challenges that notion. He didn't just learn the nuances of our industry; he immersed himself in it. Through countless conversations with candidates and clients, he became the crucial connector we needed. His ownership of the recruiting experience, especially on our direct hire side, has been not only admirable but essential. Spencer's journey reminds us that sometimes, the fresh perspective of an outsider can propel us forward in ways we never expected. So proud to have Spencer as a member of Team Essel!

A recent hiring blunder made me question my own judgement. Not long ago, I made what I thought was a slam-dunk hire. A senior manager with impressive titles and extensive experience. Their resume was a perfect fit, and I was confident they would excel in the role. But within the first 60 days, I noticed something troubling. They had a completely different approach to team management and mentoring than I expected. They believed in a hands-off style, assuming people would manage themselves and come to them only when needed. From my experience, I knew this rarely works. By month five, the cracks had widened. Despite their seniority and years in the industry, they didn't even know our basic metrics. The entire organization was starting to feel the impact of their hands-off approach. I began questioning my own judgment. How did I miss this? How could I have done such a poor job of vetting? The answer was simple yet painful: I let my own self-esteem and confidence get in the way. I hesitated to ask them to "prove themselves" with a 30-60-90 day plan. This hesitation led to frustration, disappointment, and nearly a million dollars in opportunity cost. The lesson learned? Whether you're hiring a new employee or someone with extensive experience, put them in the driver’s seat. Ask them to come up with a plan of action and talk you through it. Make this the focus of the interview, rather than being swayed by what they did 10 years ago. Trust, but verify. It could end up saving you millions. Nik #hiring #leadership #lessonslearned

We’re the agents, the connectors, the ones ensuring these star players find their perfect match in the project-based world. Our mission is clear: empower skilled trades professionals to realize their true worth and the significant impact they can make. As their advocates, we're leveling the playing field, ensuring fair compensation and optimal working conditions. We’re reshaping an industry that often overlooks the backbone of every successful project. An Artist Prepares 👨🎨 You may think you're looking at your average skilled tradesman, but what you're actually looking at is punch list specialist who knows their stuff. 🧰 Knocking out detailed punch lists at the conclusion of massive projects CORRECTLY can make or break project success. Without a properly address punch list, final inspections can't happen and therefore projects go over deadlines and over budget. 🤦♂️ #skilledtrades #skilledlabor #punchlistspecialist
