Enterprise AI for when you can't afford to be wrong.
About us
Elemental Cognition (EC) provides a revolutionary Generative AI platform with superior natural language understanding that powers expert problem-solving intelligence and research & discovery applications. EC was founded in 2015 by Dr. David Ferrucci, the renowned AI researcher and inventor of IBM’s breakthrough Watson technology. EC AI transparently engages with people to understand, reason, and explain in solving complex problems. EC technology can be used across industries and use cases. Primary targets are Healthcare / Life Science, Investment Management, Intelligence, Logistics & Scheduling, and Contact Centers. Elemental Cognition is committed to developing responsible and transparent AI that helps solve problems and deliver expertise in a way that can be understood and trusted. AI’s potential to perform as a human thought partner requires transparency – the reasons why are just as important as the answers themselves. Differentiated, Breakthrough AI: EC’s approach combines different AI strategies in a novel architecture that acquires and reasons over human-readable knowledge to solve problems collaboratively and dynamically. The result is more transparent and cost-effective delivery of expert problem-solving intelligence into conversational and discovery applications.

Good AI ethics policy defines what shouldn't change all the time: your values. Here are 3 core values that make up SAP's AI ethics policy from my recent conversation with their Chief AI Officer Dr. Philipp Herzig 👇 1. Enable human agency and oversight. 2. Ensure transparency and explainability. 3. Address bias and discrimination in model output. How does this impact how AI projects are rolled out at SAP? Any project, whether at the idea stage or fully in production, is repeatedly evaluated against those values. Doing this consistently ingrains AI ethics into your standard development procedures over time. I learned a lot from this conversation. Check out the full episode to get strategic and tactical advice from a CAIO at one of the world's largest software companies. Links in comments.

Great to see Elemental Cognition featured in this New York Times article about why large language models have a math problem, and how we’re fixing that at EC. “The world’s smartest computer scientists, it seems, have created artificial intelligence that is more liberal arts major than numbers whiz.” “Chatbots like Open AI’s ChatGPT can write poetry, summarize books and answer questions, often with human-level fluency. These systems can do math, based on what they have learned, but the results can vary and be wrong. They are fine-tuned for determining probabilities, not doing rules-based calculations. Likelihood is not accuracy, and language is more flexible, and forgiving, than math.” A wise perspective from Steve Lohr, especially important for a wide class of enterprise applications. Delivering AI that reliably solves mathematical optimization problems to automate complex decisions for businesses accurately and transparently is what we’re all about at EC. A question I often hear in my circles is, "Won't LLMs eventually do what your EC Reasoning Engine does? Won’t LLMs do it all?" The answer is no, and here's why. Put aside the fact that no LLM today gets anywhere near the abilities of the EC Reasoning Engine to solve complex problems reliably and interactively. The prevailing gospel today is “If we feed them enough data, LLMs will soon solve everything.” While LLMs can be trained to detect and generate all sorts of patterns, using LLMs for certain types of tasks may be like brushing your teeth through your ear. Even if you could do it, things won’t turn out quite the way you might have hoped. Clean teeth may end up being the least of your problems. Read this article to find out why.
Will LLMs do it all?
