In healthcare, poor digital design can put lives at risk. The types of digital design issues we see every day—from non-intuitive flows or problems with information hierarchy and prioritization, for example—can lead to potentially life-threatening problems. Remember: When patient health and safety depends on your product's usability, it's not enough to design against a set of functional requirements. Instead, you should also seek to understand—and then design in support of—users' actual workflows. For example, look at our recent redesign of the displays for HDM-Breas' IoT Ventilator Platform. Physicians relied on the earlier displays to monitor and manage the care of patients on life support. But an abundance of concern for patient safety had led to layers upon layers of legacy screens. The resulting displays were more noise than signal. We designed a new, single interface that defaulted to a standard view, yet could be easily customized as needed. This simplified display gave us room to add new functionality that served physicians' actual workflows. Why can't an ICU be more like a cockpit? From a design perspective, many ICUs are a dangerous mess. They are a perplexing jumble of cables and tubes, a dizzying array of displays conveying information about a patient's vital signs and medication delivery. You need only look to the well-documented phenomenon of “alarm fatigue” to confirm the risks of doctors and nurses making life-or-death decisions in the middle of such a distracting environment. Nurses with “alarm fatigue” neglect patient-monitoring alarms and other ICU medical equipment alarms, because seventy to ninety percent of them turn out to be false. ICUs need a more integrated source of relevant information to help physicians make better decisions and fewer mistakes. So, inspired by aircraft cockpit modernization efforts from the 1980s, a group of human factors specialists, systems engineers, and ICU physicians explored how to apply a similar approach to streamlining ICUs. Designing healthcare for the home is a different animal—one the FDA said this year it will try to tame. ⚙️ You are no longer designing for trained healthcare professionals, but for lay users. ⚙️ You are no longer designing for highly controlled clinical settings, but for varied and unpredictable home environments. We've learned ten best practices that can help you create effective and accessible home healthcare products—based on our years of experience doing just that for clients. Gone are the days when sea captains had to continually scan the horizon for looming icebergs. Sea Machines, a pioneer in autonomous marine navigation, has developed a AI-ris, an AI-guided marine navigation system. But, however innovative, AI-enhanced tech needs thoughtful interface design to ease adoption. So, Sea Machines asked Delve to develop an interface for captains to use in monitoring AI-guided vessels. The interface would need to accomplish two goals: 1) establish trust that the computer was making prudent navigation decisions 2) enhance the captain’s ability to identify and respond to potential obstacles in the sea around them. Our design of the AI-ris interface succeeds because it enhances the captains’ vision and decision-making capability through augmented reality layers on a 360-degree on-board camera feed and navigation charts. In addition, the interface simplifies vessel operation with an intuitive control interface, focused on the few common interventions a captain would make while underway. Finally, the AI-ris interface takes accessibility design to another level. The interface is designed for marine multi-function displays in high glare and low visibility scenarios, while also considering the limitations of a touch interface on a rolling, choppy ship’s bridge. The digital interface for Sea Machines’ AI-guided marine navigation system recently received two 2024 Silver MUSE Design Awards. Ready to delve deeper? Now that everything from phones to automatic sprinkler systems have functionality that requires an internet connection, most of our clients’ products need some kind of communications rig. Most often, that means a radio frequency (RF) antenna. We always think very carefully about the antenna upfront, as it determines to a large degree what the device can do. High-performance connectivity hinges on the antenna’s design, testing, and implementation. Ready to delve deeper? Explore six primary considerations for RF antenna design: https://hubs.la/Q02FyPgR0 – Delve is a product innovation firm that helps companies bring bold ideas to market through human-centered expertise— strategy, design, engineering.
