United for the benefit of future generations
About us
Today the Cowlitz people hold on to a rich culture that has been carried down from many generations. The rivers along the Cascades and Columbia have served as access points for transportation and have supplied abundant resources for our Tribe. We traded extensively and built many relationships along this corridor, which was previously known as the Cowlitz Trail. The Cowlitz Tribe is a growing force in the community we offer a variety of health services, human services, cultural resources, natural resources, housing, transportation and much more. We currently have facilities in Clark, Cowlitz, Lewis, and King Counties in an effort to maximize access for not only our tribal members, but for the surrounding community and other natives & their families.

For nearly 60 years, the Kwoneesum Dam blocked over six miles of coho salmon and steelhead habitat along the Washougal River, depriving Cowlitz people of essential food and subsistence resources. On May 10, CIT and the Columbia Land Trust came together to celebrate the dam’s removal. Originally built to create a lake for girls’ summer camp activities, the Kwoneesum Dam’s purpose was short-lived, lasting only two decades before the land was bought by a timber company. The Seattle Times recently published an article highlighting the challenges of removing ‘deadbeat dams’ like the Kwoneesum Dam in Washington and the Pacific Northwest. We extend our gratitude to the Seattle Times for shedding light on the profound cultural, ancestral, and physical impacts dam removals have on Tribes and Native nations.
