One of my favorite things that I've been able to do in my career is talk to artists about the the craft of their work AND their business. I love finding out how their creative work developed as well as how they've managed through the economics of making work, a living, and a career. Most of these conversations have been in the privacy of a professional relationship, a studio visit, or late evenings in dark bars with too many drinks. Until now...I got the opportunity to talk to artist and writer, Virginia Hanusik for The Creative Independent. Hanusik was born in New York, but is currently based in New Orleans, Louisiana - where I met her in 2021. We've had many versions of this conversation through the years, and I'm excited we finally got an opportunity to commit it to print. Hanusik's work has been exhibited internationally, and featured in publications like "The New Yorker", "National Geographic", and the "British Journal of Photography", among (many)others. She regularly writes and speaks on landscape representation and the visual narrative of climate change. We talked about developing an art practice, how she came to focus on the relationship between landscape, culture, and the built environment, how research expands a project, and teaching yourself along the way. We also talked about how she made her first book, "Into the Quiet and the Light: Water, Life, and Land Loss in South Louisiana" out now with Columbia University Press. Check out the interview below, and let me know in the comments if there are any artists or creatives who's work you've always been wanted to know more about.
