About us

Amarillo is the 14th-largest city in the state of Texas, the largest in the Texas Panhandle, and the seat of Potter County. A portion of the city extends into Randall County. The population was 173,627 at the 2000 census. The Amarillo metropolitan area has an estimated population of 236,113 in four counties. In July 2009, the population was estimated at 189,389. In 1913, Amarillo became the first Texas city and the fifth in United States to use the council-manager form of municipal government, with all governmental powers resting in a legislative body called a commission. Amarillo's commission is composed of five elected commissioners, one of whom is the mayor of the city. The mayor and each commissioner serves a two-year term. The role of the commission is to pass ordinances and resolutions, adopt regulations, and appoint city officials, including the city manager. While the mayor serves as a presiding officer of the commission, the city manager is the administrative head of the municipal government, and is responsible for the administration of all departments. The city commission holds its regular meetings on Tuesday of each week.

The Amarillo Environmental Health Department Vector Team is small but mighty, consisting of just three dedicated members, and is on it every day from March to November! This hardworking trio covers a lot of ground. In 2023, they pre-treated 30 acres, larvicide 60 acres, and adulticide 15,000 acres. Their efforts are crucial in managing mosquito populations and preventing the spread of diseases like West Nile and Zika. Did you know that mosquitoes are the deadliest insects in the world due to the diseases they carry? This makes our team's work even more vital for keeping Amarillo safe and healthy. #CityofAmarillo #EnvironmentalHealth #VectorControl #AmarilloTexas

For the 33rd straight year, the City of Amarillo has earned the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the COA budget. According to the GFOA, the award represents a significant achievement. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, an entity has to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. “The City of Amarillo is committed to providing the city budget to citizens in a convenient and easy-to-understand way,” said COA Assistant City Manager/CFO Laura Storrs. “This is a financial standard the city has maintained and upheld for decades.” According to the GFOA, guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories - and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories. There are over 1,700 participants in the Budget Awards Program. The City of Amarillo is excited to announce significant upgrades to the lighting systems at Sam Houston Park, San Jacinto Park, and Medical Center Park. These new LED systems replace outdated lighting, greatly improving both the quality and safety of our parks. This $1.2 million project, primarily funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, represents our commitment to enhancing public spaces and ensuring a safer, more enjoyable environment for our community. Musco Sports Lighting, LLC, a leader in innovative lighting solutions, has been contracted for this important upgrade. In addition to the new lighting, our Parks and Recreation Department is undertaking concrete sidewalk repairs at Sam Houston Park and Medical Center Park, further enhancing accessibility and safety. We look forward to seeing residents benefit from these improvements and enjoy our parks to the fullest. #CityofAmarillo #ParksandRec #ParkImprovements #SafeParks #AmarilloTexas #ARPA
