This is probably one of the most important things to do when elevating our child’s/clients self esteem. Sometimes we know a function of the behavior, but it’s really important to not just put a bandaid on the problem but actually figure out the setting event . When they are engaging in attention-seeking behaviors, many times it is low self-esteem that is at the root of it. We had a fantastic Culture Day at our Highland Park clinic! Each room was decorated to represent a different culture, allowing our kiddos to experience and learn new things as they visited each room. 1. When in doubt... PLAY... (builds rapport) 2. Find the smile! .... Do it again (reinforcement) 3. Copy what they say and do. Speak their language! 4. Narrate your play, like your in a movie and point to what they are looking at. 5. If a child is playing alone and seems to prefer that... start handing them peices of the toys they are playing with... no need to be intrusive, just start involving yourself quietly. 6.Stay in front of your kiddo at eye level as much as possible. 7. If behaviors increase, take a deep breath and be the calm in the storm. 8.Its a work in progress, ask for constructive criticism constantly. 9. If parents deep question, respond with "I will definitely forward your questions to the BCBA". 10.
