Brave Buddies® is designed to help children ages 3–12 and diagnosed with selective mutism overcome their anxiety and speak in any setting With Brave Buddies®, we tailor speaking goals to the individual needs of each child, targeting things like presenting, spontaneous speech, larger group interactions, and community exposures. There is a special curriculum for older children (8 through 12) who participate in the program, which incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies, such as mindfulness, education about anxiety, and goal setting. We help every participating child gain confidence — whatever that means for them, specifically. Our next Five-Day Brave Buddies® Program will be held in New York and begins August 5th. Our RO-DBT program is a 24- or 26-week program to help teens and young adults increase flexibility and social connectedness. Patients learn core RO-DBT skills in a class format with other individuals of similar ages and with compatible goals. Both programs are enrolling now! The link for more information is at the bottom of this post. –– Kids who are overcontrolled can be rigid and inflexible. They can have trouble handling change or new experiences. Their lack of expressiveness can make other people avoid them or not trust them. They can be isolated and lonely. There’s now a form of therapy for people who are overcontrolled. It’s an offshoot of a kind of therapy called DBT (dialectical behavior therapy). DBT teaches people how to control their feelings in a healthy way. The new therapy, called RO DBT (radically open DBT), teaches skills for becoming more open, more flexible, and more connected to other people. Learning flexibility and connecting to others both help overcontrollers feel less threatened by things that are new or outside their comfort zone. To enable overcontrollers to connect with others, they are taught skills that target openness about yourself and being honest about how you really feel. Even though many colleges offer learning support resources, some students may lack the self-advocacy or executive functioning skills to effectively avail themselves of these services. Through our College Success Program℠, we position these students for success with strong self-advocacy and problem-solving skills. Our College Success Program℠ starts this August.
