About us

Limiting global warming to 1.5’C requires urgent investments in smallholder regenerative agriculture and climate actions on a massive scale. To roll back climate change and address poverty, we cannot forego the agency, voice, and actions of millions of farming families whose livelihoods depend on ecosystems and the environment. The CASH Coalition is a collaborative initiative working with smallholder farmers and local communities in the Global South. We work to make regenerative agriculture and climate action profitable for smallholders, impart fortitude, agency, and resources to farming communities, and contribute to rehabilitating and preserving the ecosystems and climate conditions on which the world depends. Our deep roots and longstanding, trust-based relationships with land-stewarding communities uniquely position us to create high-quality, nature-based carbon credits that inclusively and directly channel benefits to communities while promoting climate action, poverty mitigation, and sustainable livelihoods at the frontline of climate change.

Last year, we equipped farmers to earn $421 million in total new profits and assets—a 33% increase from 2022! 📈 With your help, we're working to ensure that the 4.8 million farmers we serve have big harvests, healthy families, and rich soils, so measuring our impact every year is a crucial part of our operations. Read all about our results and impact in 2023—from planting 74 million trees to doubling growth in Burundi— in our Annual Report here! 👇🏿

We are proud to work alongside numerous organizations to help amplify our impact on small-scale farmers across Zambia. By fostering these partnerships, we are able to promote conservation and support sustainable livelihoods for these farmers. Our collaboration with Acorn, among others, has been instrumental in driving this mission forward. Recently, ACORN produced a mini-documentary that highlights our partnership and the significant benefits it brings to farmers on the ground. #zambia #sustainabledevelopment #agroforestry https://lnkd.in/dYXpN5aK https://lnkd.in/dYXpN5aK

It is wonderful when they receive the recognition they deserve for positively impacting the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and the earth. 🥳 Congratulations to SEKEM Group, Helmy Abouleish, Justus Harm, Thoraya Seada, and their colleagues for winning the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity in recognition of their "significant contributions to global food security, climate resilience, and ecosystem protection." 🌱 🇪🇬🌍

Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming, Rattan Lal and SEKEM are the winners of the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity! The three visionary sustainable agriculture pioneers will received jointly the €1 million Prize for their substantial contribution to global food security, climate resilience and ecosystem protection: Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming (India), a state-wide programme supporting smallholders, predominantly women, switch to natural farming; Rattan Lal (USA/India), a scientist who pioneered a soil-centric approach to agriculture; SEKEM (Egypt), for its biodynamic agriculture work, the Egyptian Biodynamic Association – a network enabling farmers to transition to biodynamic practices. Congratulations!

Executive Director of the CASH Coalition; Social Entrepreneur and Philanthropic Advisor in Pursuit of Impact at Scale

I’m very pleased to share this opportunity to lead the CASH Coalition! This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a multi-stakeholder initiative, drive meaningful and impactful work for the planet and smallholder livelihoods, and work with innovative organizations and social entrepreneurs with deep roots in smallholder and local communities. I have been fortunate to lead CASH through its start-up period and stand it up as an independent organization. Collaborating with like-minded and mission-driven colleagues is always thrilling. It is a privilege to do so in the service of overcoming barriers that prevent smallholders from accessing climate finance, solving problems that unlock regenerative and climate actions, and improving livelihoods. I believe the time is ripe for new leadership to steward the Coalition through its next phase of development. Please share this opportunity widely!

(Warning! Unofficial long post about #regenagric). Last week I went for an annual "cool stuff 1AF is doing" discovery trip to go deeper on our forest landscape restoration and regenerative agriculture (mainly CA) trials in Rwanda with Colin Christensen. Some of what we learnt from our amazing teams: 1. 💵 Delivering a more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems at scale is way more time consuming in the field, expensive (via high touch extension, trialing what works, bespoke design) and complex than conventional agriculture across smallholder mosaic landscapes. 2. 🗺 Context is king, what works for one farmer/agro-ecological zone won't work for another. We visited phase 2 client trials for cover crop/conservation agric practices in the highlands of Western Rwanda. We still haven't found a cover crop (a cover crop is crop planted for soil health only) that works for those climatic conditions with over 12 tested AND the casual labour farmers hired is often unable to do the more intensive hand weeding required to maintain 0 till (more time = more $). Those clients have experienced losses in yield over 3 years (on trial plot vs control) and an increase in labour costs. HOWEVER, trials report really successful yields in lowland, semi-arid regions (where CA traditionally works best). NB: Sunn Hemp (Crotalaria juncea - not related 😉) is the most successful trial for cover crops so far outside of the highlands but the seed is extremely expensive (15% of a farmer's monthly income but its free for the trial) and looks a bit like a weed shading the maize (see pic) - which will make behaviour change really hard at scale (cleaner rows are thought to be more productive). 3. 💡 Localised R&D adapted to different contexts is therefore incredibly important before we become too prescriptive across landscapes. We visited our research station and learnt about exciting inoculant tests using locally developed bacteria strains from Rwandan sugar cane - inoculants might reduce some synthetic fertiliser use, if proven, but we don't know what will work and for which crops/soil types - hence all the buckets! 4. 🌳 Forest landscape restoration, i.e. more intensive on farm tree/shrub planting for bespoke contour (erosion control), boundary (wind-break), shade (for coffee), intercropping (staple yield benefits) - is a pilot which takes farmers through a boundary mapping and tree package selection process for their individual needs and best landscape restoration outcomes. The enrolment process is intensive and at best you can only enrol 2-3 farmers per day. We hope carbon can pay for some of this one day (trees take time to grow!), but its so tough to pre-finance and scale this without big/well trained field teams + sizeable and flexible philanthropic funding. I think we'll get there, but back to #1, it will requite many many multiples of climate finance💰for farmers and implementers to scale (beyond what the carbon markets can absorb).
