About us
We are Carbon13, the venture builder for the climate emergency. We will select and support thousands of entrepreneurs to build ventures each with the potential to reduce or remove at least 10 million tonnes of CO2e per annum once at scale. We have invested in 64 innovative carbon emissions-mitigating startups since 2021, which have a current market value of £140 million, and are collectively working towards 500 million tonnes of emissions reduction by 2040. Our ventures are working across sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, the built environment, food, and materials. Notable alumni include Kita, Biozeroc, Infyos, Nium, Bluemethane, Samudra Oceans, Cocoon Carbon, Tierra Foods, AED Energy, Preoptima and Kestrix. I'm delighted to share that Climate-i has been awarded a Research, Development and Innovation grant by Cornwall Council Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Growth Hub to accelerate development of our hardware to capture SF6 - the world's most potent greenhouse gas. The #Green Industrial Revolution is happening in the middle of London, where in the early 20th century the city had its old manufacturing industries. Exiting to see the Cocoon team to build their new home in the Bethnal Green rail arches. I remember going to a jazz club in those arches in 2010. Now Cocoon, who came out of the Carbon13 cohort 5, will be building their #greensteel, #greencement and industrial #carboncapture product.
2 months ago we got the keys to an empty rail arch in Bethnal Green… After some serious hustle from the team we now have a new R&D, engineering and lab space for the growing Cocoon team. The space has been kitted out with everything we need to run rapid experiments on our low carbon, cementitious material and slag upcycling technology. We’re also hiring two new R&D engineering roles to help us decarbonize the steel and cement industries in sync. Well, with our yeast derived oil, rather than palm oil, as a key ingredient it is a cookie with a much reduced environmental footprint. We're projecting 90% less land used and 90% fewer emissions from producing our oil. Congratulations to Ki Hydrogen! A great example of a science-based startup pulling together different ecosystem partners to move their roadmap forward. About 70% of Carbon13's startups are #hardtech, deeptech and science-based. We adapt our support for these founders on our programmes the Venture Builder and the Venture Launchpad accordingly.
I’m incredibly excited to finally share that we’ve won an Innovate UK Smart Grant! 🏆 Smart Grants are notoriously competitive, with this round funding 46 projects out of 1,911 submitted applications through Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency. Our project was chosen for both its innovation and scalability, promising significant national and international impact. We look forward to collaborating with the Birmingham Energy Institute, leveraging their expertise to advance our biomass electrolysis technology. A special thanks to our COO, Carl Banbury, PhD, who spent countless weekends getting this grant across the line. His dedication and hard work were instrumental in securing this funding. And more exciting news - we are hiring! We’re looking for a Chemical Engineer to lead our scale-up efforts at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham.
