In a state as big as California, emergencies are inevitable. And when they happen on the state highway system, Caltrans is there to respond to and recover from those emergencies. The Maintenance Emergency Services subdivision is responsible for leading the department’s emergency response efforts. To ensure everyone knows their role during an emergency, they held an All Hazards Emergency Preparedness Workshop from June 11, 2024, to June 13, 2024.    “The goal is to promote how each unit within Caltrans can help contribute when an emergency situation exists to provide critical information and resources from their sectors to department, state, and federal leadership,” said Deputy Division Chief of Emergency Services Prakash Sah. Participants from the districts and headquarters learned about different hazards and the impacts they have on Caltrans. They received briefings from all five of the offices within Emergency Services and heard from speakers with Caltrans Public Affairs, Caltrans Legislative Affairs, the California Office of Emergency Services, and the National Weather Services—all of whom partner with Caltrans and the Division of Maintenance during an emergency. Attendees were also invited to attend optional field trips that were available to tour the Bay Bridge Cable Room on the new east span of the bridge, and/or to explore the Bay Bridge from a boat with the Maintenance Boat Inspection team.   Caltrans Emergency Services’ mission is to prepare today for tomorrow’s response and this workshop pushes the department a step closer to that mission and vision. #Caltrans #EmergencyPrepareness #Safety

🏔 Today is National Climb A Mountain Day and we want to spotlight our Caltrans Rock Climbers! Check out these incredible images of our very own crews out in their element. They are Engineers and Maintenance crews by trade and when the need arises, they get up, show up, and tackle the obstacles in their path to accomplish their work goals. Climbing a mountain takes training, perseverance, and dedication. The crews volunteer to participate in annual training at the Kingvale Training Academy’s Rock Scaling and Climbing class. Here climbers are trained and certified in climbing, rappelling, rockfall mitigation and aerial rescue techniques. This Innovation utilizes rock climbing/ rappelling gear, the use of UAS drones as well as the use of 3D mapping of slopes. The team mitigates rockfalls on district routes by identifying potential hazards, planning solutions, removing dangerous rocks and assisting in accessing culverts on steep slopes. The most experienced mountaineer will tell you that it’s challenging and life-changing. However, that is what keeps them driven to reach the peak of the mountain. They know once they reach the top, the feeling of accomplishment and pride will remind them they can do anything as long as they commit. Thank you to these brave volunteers/climbers/crews for maintaining and keeping our roads safe! Today is your reminder to start your journey up your own mountain by realizing anything is possible.
